Mets fire – Carlos Mendoza was fired as New York Mets manager on Friday after a six-game losing streak left the team struggling, and Andy Green was named interim replacement.
NEW YORK — Carlos Mendoza found out his time with the underperforming New York Mets was over on Friday, with the organization moving quickly to replace him.
Andy Green will take over as interim manager.
The decision comes after New York slipped through another stretch of losses. The Mets are 34-47 following a six-game losing streak. They sit 15 games behind NL East-leading Atlanta and 9 1/2 games back of the NL’s last wild-card berth.
For Mets owner Steve Cohen, the patience has been tied to one expectation that hasn’t moved: winning a title. Cohen’s remarks made that clear. New York has gone without a World Series championship since 1986. and the team entered this season with baseball’s highest payroll at $358 million. with projections that they would add another $124 million in luxury tax.
“Our commitment to bringing our fans a championship-calibre team has not changed,” Cohen said in a statement. “There is no sugar-coating it: this season has been a disappointment and our fans deserve better than what we’ve delivered.”
Mendoza’s departure also carries the weight of what the Mets already spent and what they were supposed to be. Mendoza replaced Buck Showalter after the 2023 season and took over a franchise that had reached a high point quickly. Under his leadership, the Mets posted a 206-198 record. New York reached the NL Championship Series in 2024. but failed to make the playoffs last year. and this season has turned into one of the sport’s biggest disappointments.
David Stearns, the Mets president of baseball operations, praised Mendoza’s influence inside the building even as the team acknowledged it needs results on the field.
“Carlos has led the organization with passion and grace and is beloved by everyone who works with him on a daily basis. ” Stearns said in a statement. “Carlos’ impact on our players, staff, and culture over the last three seasons has been transformative. Unfortunately, we know we are falling short and change is necessary to move forward.”.
Green’s appointment offers a familiar type of leadership with a Mets connection already established. A former major-league infielder, he joined the organization in 2023 as senior vice president of baseball development. As a manager. Green spent time at the top level with the San Diego Padres. leading them to a 274-366 record from 2016-19.
The Mets now face the immediate task of stabilizing their season under Green as the gap to both Atlanta and the NL wild-card race remains stubbornly in place.
