For years, Facebook search has worked like a door with handles: you type a question, you get links, you scroll until you find something that matches. Meta’s new “AI Mode” wants to change that rhythm.

On June 15. the company announced that AI Mode on Facebook will let users get AI-generated answers instead of relying only on traditional search results. The promise is that the answers will be rooted in the culture. opinions. and recommendations people share publicly across Meta’s apps—not just in what the search engine can return as a list of results.

Meta describes AI Mode as “a search tab that uses Meta AI to give answers rooted in the culture. opinions. and recommendations people share publicly across our apps. not just links.” In practice. that means the feature is powered by Meta AI and Muse Spark and pulls from public content. Users won’t simply see a list of links; AI Mode generates an answer built from public discussions across Facebook and other Meta apps.

It also comes with an extra layer that could make the search experience feel more like discovery than retrieval. AI Mode is designed to surface real perspectives and experiences rather than producing a generic set of search results. After an AI-generated answer appears, users can ask follow-up questions.

The tab is set to appear alongside existing Facebook search options such as People and Marketplace. That placement matters: it signals Meta’s attempt to weave AI-generated responses into the same space where users look for people to connect with and items to buy.

Because AI Mode draws from public content, the reliability question won’t be theoretical. The answers will depend on what’s posted in Groups. what people discuss in community threads. and what shows up in short-form video on Reels. That’s useful for everyday questions—finding local recommendations or gauging what people are saying about a topic. It’s also the reason the enterprise challenge is immediate: public posts and community discussions can be incomplete. outdated. or wrong.

Meta’s own framing leans toward “real perspectives. ” but the risk is that those perspectives can include misinformation. stale takes. or context that doesn’t survive the transformation into a neatly packaged answer. TechCrunch pointed to concerns around whether AI-generated answers based on public posts—paired with Meta’s Forum app—could end up surfacing outdated or misleading information.

The biggest operational pressure lands on the people who publish on Facebook in the first place. Public-facing brand posts. employee comments. creator content. and community discussions can all become inputs into how AI tools summarize information online. If users can’t easily see where an answer came from. judging whether it’s reliable could get harder—especially when the response is generated rather than assembled from clearly presented sources.

AI Mode is also arriving as part of a larger wave of AI features for Facebook. Meta is adding AI-assisted creative tools. including collage cutout templates. video transition effects. and photo presets that can change clothing. hairstyles. and accessories. The company says camera roll sharing suggestions remain opt-in and can be turned off at any time.

TechCrunch also reported additional AI features already landing on Facebook: animated profile pictures, AI-generated Marketplace replies for sellers, and creator tools that suggest posting times and summarize audience comments.

For IT leaders, the takeaway is blunt. Public platform content is increasingly becoming material that AI-generated experiences can summarize and present back to users. That means organizations may need to pay closer attention to what they publish. what employees share publicly. and how those signals could be distilled into answers—whether those answers reflect the most accurate version of events or something messier that happens to be loud online.
