Metallica electrifies Berlin as record stadium crowd gathers

Saturday evening saw Germany’s biggest ever stadium concert at Berlin’s Olympiastadion: Metallica played there in front of 94,000 people. The record previously belonged to U2, who drew a crowd of just over 90,000 to Olympiastadion in 2009. Usually, the venue’s maximum capacity for gigs is around 72,000. This was increased to 76,000 for the DFB Cup final on May 29 and then to the record-breaking number a day later. This was done by using a central stage area, thus leaving no seat empty. Tickets cost

up to €2,450 for the “Snake Pit” right in front of the stage. At the show, the heavy metal legends played tracks from their entire discography, as well as covering Rammstein’s “Sonne”. It was their 7th time in Germany to date. Coincidentally, Metallica’s record-breaking show happened on the same day that rapper Ye (Kanye West) broke the world record for biggest stadium concert in history, drawing 118,000 spectators to Istanbul’s Atatürk Stadium. Ye’s performances have previously been banned in countries such as Italy, Poland and

the UK due to his history of antisemitic remarks and open endorsement of Nazism.
