Messi’s friendly in College Station aims $12M boost

Argentina vs – Argentina and Honduras meet Saturday at Kyle Field in a 7 p.m. World Cup friendly tied to the Road to the 2026 World Cup, and College Station officials are projecting about a $12 million economic impact—along with lasting tourism benefits as international fans

On Saturday, Kyle Field won’t just be filling up for another game day rhythm—it’s expected to feel like one, only with a different flag in the stands and Lionel Messi’s name echoing through the crowd.

Argentina and Honduras are set to face off at 7 p.m. in a World Cup friendly that is part of the Road to the 2026 World Cup, hosted by North American countries. The match is significant for fans because Messi led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup title. and the friendly could be his final World Cup—something that makes the trip to College Station feel bigger than a normal international matchup.

Visit College Station is already working from projections that it believes may be low. Angie Bertinot, the Marketing Manager for Visit College Station, said the economic projections for the event are likely an underestimate. “We ran some numbers a few weeks ago. and we were looking around a 12 million dollar economic impact to the city — we really think that’s probably pretty conservative.”.

Bertinot said the event is expected to fill hotels, restaurants, and shops across the city. She also emphasized that the arrival of international fans brings a new demographic to College Station—one that could turn into repeat visits for the local tourism industry. “There’s a long-term value of that of somebody coming here. having an amazing experience and hopefully thinking. hey. I’m gonna come back here for something else.”.

The friendly is part of a streak of large-scale events College Station has hosted recently. including the Savannah Bananas and USA Track and Field. Bertinot said the city’s ability to handle events of varying sizes is a key part of its identity as a host city. “We have really a variety of type of events that we’re hosting again. big and small. everything in between. and that’s what we want to market — that’s what we want to as we’re out there selling is that we can support any type of event.”.

For anyone heading to the match, Bertinot said to expect conditions similar to an Aggie game day. Texas A&M has reserved parking available in advance, and buses will run for parking further from the stadium. Parking is also available at Century Square and Northgate, both within walking distance of campus.

The day starts early: pre-game activities begin at 1 p.m. at Aggie Park. There, the Texas A&M bookstore will sell soccer merchandise and Panini will be on site with sticker books and trading items. Visit College Station will also be there with free rally towels and photo opportunities.

In North Plaza, fans can also look forward to a fan fest. Bertinot said it will feature Road to 26 partners including Zambos. Celsius. and Home Depot. which is expected to have a large inflatable of Messi on site. Visit Houston will also be present to promote the upcoming FIFA World Cup matches in Houston later this month.

For residents and supporters not attending either event this weekend, Bertinot said to expect heavier traffic on Highway 6 and in the area around campus—especially in the hours leading up to kickoff.

The friendly comes as group play for the 2026 World Cup begins June 11, and with Messi’s tournament future looming, the match at Kyle Field is drawing attention far beyond College Station’s usual event calendar.

  1. I don’t get why people act like Messi is gonna save the city lol. But if hotels and restaurants fill up, cool I guess.

  2. Wait, is this the one where they said it might be his final World Cup? because I thought the World Cup is only every 4 years so how does a friendly count for that. Also “Road to 2026” sounds like marketing, not real impact. Still gonna be packed though.

  3. College Station about to get rich off football people and tourists. I heard they’re overestimating, like always, but honestly if Messi shows up then yeah I’m sure it’s huge. $12 million feels low… or high… depends who’s doing the math. And Kyle Field not filling up on game day? come on, it’s Kyle Field.
