Melanie Moreno’s plus-size past sparks Love Island backlash

Love Island USA season 8 contestant Melanie Moreno has become a fresh lightning rod after fans resurfaced her earlier plus-sized modeling work—prompting criticism over body representation, even as viewers continue to praise her looks and confidence.
Love Island USA doesn’t just bring contestants into the Villa—it brings their history, too. For Melanie Moreno, the buzz hasn’t been limited to her time on screen. Since entering season 8 as one of the show’s most discussed bombshells. her past modeling career has resurfaced. and with it. a new argument about body size and representation.
Online, fans pointed to Melanie’s earlier modeling work and questioned whether the show has fully embraced different body types. Under an Instagram video showing her modeling days. one person wrote. “Is it just me or is Love Island a lil fat phobic because where tf are all the plus-sized baddies?!!” Another commenter added. “Wish she had came on the show thicker [sic]. We don’t get enough thick representation.”.
Even with the criticism, the reaction hasn’t been all sharp edges. Many viewers still praised Melanie’s beauty—then and now—calling attention to the way she carried herself in her runway years and how she looks today as part of the reality cast.
Melanie Moreno is a Philadelphia native who now resides in Los Angeles. In her Love Island USA introduction, she said, “I’m a Philly girl — we’re so real, we’re so blunt,” adding, “But we’re so fun. We’re fun as f**k.”
She is 24 years old.
Before joining the Villa, Melanie worked as a plus-sized model. Past videos and photos have circulated online, showing her as a catwalk performer. In one clip from her modeling days, Melanie strutted down a catwalk for a Pretty Little Thing show in Miami.
She also spoke about her modeling aspirations during a 2021 interview with Voyage L.A. In that conversation. she said. “My biggest dream since I was 10 years old was to be a model. ” explaining. “I lost myself so badly that I let go of that dream and tried to focus on something that was ‘more practical.’” She continued that her manager. Elizabeth. saw potential that she “didn’t see in myself for a while.”.
Melanie said the main reason she gave up on her dream was a belief that she had to “look perfect to even get into the business. ” and that she “thought I needed a specific look or a specific body type.” She later reflected. “Little did I know I was wrong. I tried for nine years to get scouted and signed. but I still truly believe I was found at the perfect time.”.
Outside the Villa, Melanie’s work appears to have shifted away from full-time modeling. She works as a bikini store manager.
The new conversation around Melanie isn’t just about one contestant’s past. It has become a test of what viewers want to see on reality TV—especially when her own story includes a long stretch of trying to break into modeling under the pressure of needing to “look perfect.” For now. Melanie’s place in the season 8 spotlight comes with a spotlight of her own—one that pushes viewers to look harder at who gets to be presented as part of the show’s beauty standards.

Love Island always picks “diverse” but it’s like… why does it take y’all digging up old pics to notice it? 🤷♀️
So they’re mad she wasn’t “thick enough” when she literally is plus-size? Seems like people just need something to be upset about. Also Pretty Little Thing? That’s not exactly a size-inclusive brand in general.
I saw a TikTok saying Love Island is fatphobic because they “edit out” the plus-size girls… like does the show literally have rules? Idk I just feel like if she was thicker they wouldn’t get backlash, but now it’s like they’re doing a PR thing.
Man people digging up her old runway stuff like it proves something either way. She looks good, confident, whatever, but these arguments always get weird. Plus-size representation shouldn’t be a debate every damn season…
