Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston spark Fever Cup win

Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston carried the Indiana Fever to a 114-106 overtime win over the Chicago Sky on Thursday night, turning a late regulation miscue into a history-making performance as the team stayed on course for a Commissioner’s Cup repeat.

The Indiana Fever looked headed toward a comfortable win—until five seconds remained in regulation, and everything turned on a single, costly moment.

With Indiana leading and having built a 19-point advantage in the second quarter. the Chicago Sky rallied to make the game tight late. Then an unlucky Kelsey Mitchell turnover with five seconds left gave Skylar Diggins a clear opening. Diggins drained a three at the buzzer to tie it for Chicago and force overtime. By the time the dust settled, Indiana had pulled through, 114-106, in overtime.

Aliyah Boston and Caitlin Clark did the heavy lifting. Boston, an All-Star forward/center, finished with 34 points on 13-for-26 shooting, along with 12 rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. Clark, the Fever’s All-Star guard, posted 32 points on 8-for-18 shooting, adding 10 assists and seven rebounds.

The WNBA says Boston and Clark are the first teammates in league history to each record a 30-point double-double in the same game. It’s a rare kind of output—two stars producing at the same time, the same level, in the same matchup.

After the win, Clark pointed to something less measurable than box scores: the trust between them.

“I mean, I think we’re good friends,” Clark said at her and Boston’s joint postgame presser. “That always helps. Like. yeah. you can be teammates and play basketball. but if you really care for each other and love each other off the court — and I think that goes for our whole team — when you have that bond and truly get to know somebody and build a relationship with them. that helps.”.

Clark went further, describing how their connection shows up when games get difficult.

“When you’re on the court, you’re gonna go through moments of adversity. That’s just basketball, and that’s what helps to get you through, but also I feel like I always know where Aliyah is. I think we’ve got a little telepathy know, so, hopefully, we can get that going more, too.”

It’s the kind of explanation that makes Thursday night’s comeback feel less like luck and more like chemistry under pressure.

That relationship has been built in the open, too. The Fever selected Boston out of South Carolina with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft. After her iconic Iowa career concluded, Clark followed Boston to Indiana as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft.

Teams that pair back-to-back No. 1 overall picks have found success before. The Seattle Storm drafted Jewell Loyd and Breanna Stewart at No. 1 overall in 2015 and 2016, respectively, and won two championships in Seattle in 2018 and 2020. The Las Vegas Aces drafted A’ja Wilson and Jackie Young at No. 1 in 2018 and 2019, respectively, and have won three of the past four WNBA titles.

For the Fever, the goal now is to keep that momentum moving toward the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup. Indiana is chasing a chance to become the first-ever repeat Commissioner’s Cup champions, and head coach Stephanie White believes the foundation is there.

“When you have the bookends — when you have a point guard, and you have a center that are special — you can build a team around that,” White said postgame. “And certainly you add in Kelsey [Mitchell], who had already been here […] it can make for some really special things.”

Thursday’s game had the kind of swing that can derail a season—19 points in the second quarter, then an abrupt tie forced by a late turnover and Diggins’ shot—but the Fever answered in overtime instead of collapsing.

They’ll need that same resilience as Commissioner’s Cup play continues. The Fever (7-5) will face the Connecticut Sun (2-12) on Saturday. Indiana is 3-1 in the Commissioner’s Cup, a record second to the New York Liberty (4-0) in the Eastern Conference.
