Darren McKennis Captures Heroes Day Chess Challengers Cup Title

Candidate Master Darren McKennis topped the 2026 Heroes Day Chess Challengers Cup, finishing ahead of Justin Kirton as winners were also decided in other sections.
A final-round push secured Darren McKennis the Heroes Day Chess Challengers Cup, and the standings reflected how tight the competition was.
On Sunday evening, Misryoum reported that the Candidate Master from Jamaica took the top prize at the seventh and final round held at the Grand Salle, Central Bank.. In the 1800-plus section, McKennis widened his advantage to 1.5 points, closing the event with a total that left Barbadian Justin Kirton in second place.
McKennis finished six points ahead of Kirton, who ended on 4.5. Young Jeremiah Farley rounded out the top three with 3.5 points.
It is often the closing rounds that reveal who can stay steady under pressure, and McKennis’s margin suggests he managed the endgame moments just as well as the earlier stages.
In the 1799–1400 section, Loki Clarke kept hold of first place with 5.5 points after the sixth round, while Allan Herbert moved into second on 4.5. Janiyah Browne, Savion Little, and Gaybrianna Moore were also tied on 4.5 points in the latest positions leading into the conclusion.
Meanwhile, the unrated category played out differently, with William Deer taking the title. Deer ended on six points, and although Benjamin Farmer finished with the same total, the deciding factor was Deer’s superior rating.
Zane Ward, Liam Byer, and Kevin St Hill all finished on five points each in the unrated grouping.
With multiple sections decided by both totals and tie-breaks, the day underscored how chess rewards not only results, but also consistency when competitors finish close together.
For Misryoum, the Heroes Day Chess Challengers Cup offered a clear headline in McKennis’s victory, alongside standout finishes across the other classes.
