Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are set to play versions of themselves in Apple TV’s new comedy “Brothers,” a premise that starts as a question of family history and quickly turns into a mess they can’t outrun.

The series begins with the pair uncovering a decades-old secret: they might actually be brothers. The storyline is fictional. but the show leans hard on a real possibility. with a plot that splashes into personal identity and friendship—then escalates into the kind of uncertainty that can’t be laughed off.

“Brothers” centers on McConaughey and Harrelson as themselves in a narrative inspired by the very real fact that they could be related. The synopsis says their friendship is thrown into chaos when they discover that they may share the same father. and the pressure doesn’t stay contained for long. In one key setup, Harrelson’s fictional version goes to stay at McConaughey’s ranch in Austin. What should be a calm fact-finding trip becomes destabilizing after McConaughey’s mom—played by Holland Taylor—lets the possible familial connection slip.

“As Woody turns the ranch upside down in pursuit of the truth. Matthew finds himself juggling an entirely different identity crisis: a potential run for Governor of Texas. ” Apple describes. The company calls the series “a heartfelt. chaotic. and wildly funny story about friendship. family. fame. and the messy line between myth and reality.”.

That identity crisis isn’t just a TV prop. The show’s political arc is inspired by real life: McConaughey has discussed the possibility of a Texas gubernatorial run in the past. The fictionalized governor storyline lands alongside an unsettling premise—one that mirrors what the two actors have publicly shared off-screen.

In 2023. McConaughey revealed on Kelly Ripa’s “Let’s Talk Off Camera” that a few years earlier. his mom told Harrelson. “Woody. I knew your dad.” McConaughey said they “did some math” and found that Harrelson’s dad was on furlough at the same time that McConaughey’s mom and dad were in their second divorce. suggesting it’s possible the actors share the same dad.

Harrelson confirmed the “crazy” story later that year on “The Late Show.” He said nine months before McConaughey’s birth. his mom was on a sabbatical from her relationship with his supposed father. Jim. Harrelson also said McConaughey was reluctant to take a DNA test to confirm whether they’re related.

“We want to go and test, but for him, it’s a much more big deal,” Harrelson said, adding: “He feels like he’s losing a father, but I’m like, ‘No, you’re gaining a different father, and a brother.’”

On top of that family uncertainty, the actors bring a separate layer of shared work history. McConaughey and Harrelson famously played police partners in the acclaimed first season of HBO’s “True Detective,” and both received Emmy nominations for their roles.

Apple TV’s “Brothers” premieres on Sept. 23. Alongside McConaughey and Harrelson, Natalie Martinez, Brittany Ishibashi, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton, Noah Carganilla, Highdee Kuan and Oona Yaffe also star.

  1. So they’re actually brothers?? Apple TV really said family secrets like it’s a documentary lol.

  2. I didn’t realize this was based on that “maybe they share a father” thing. Kinda wild, but also why would that even be a thing people bring up? Sounds like a mess though.

  3. Brothers starts as a joke and then suddenly one of them is like running for governor? I swear I read somewhere Harrelson already said he’s moving to Texas, so this feels like they’re just exaggerating. Also the ranch part… ranches always have secrets, I guess.

  4. Not gonna lie, the title makes me think they’re literally playing brothers like real siblings, not “versions of themselves.” And the mom letting the secret slip?? That sounds like sitcom writing. I’m confused if this is supposed to be true or not, because the article keeps hinting it’s real.
