Mbappé’s penalty kick sends France into World Cup quarterfinals

Mbappé penalty – Kylian Mbappé scored France’s winner from the penalty spot as Les Bleus survived extreme heat to beat Paraguay 1-0 and reach the World Cup quarterfinals for the fourth straight time. The goal came in the 70th minute after Diego Gomez was penalized for tripping
PHILADELPHIA — Kylian Mbappé didn’t just wait for the chance to break through; he waited through a match that seemed determined to grind everyone down.
On a steamy July Fourth at Lincoln Financial Field. with an extreme heat warning in effect as temperatures hovered around 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 Celsius). France endured a physically stubborn Paraguay side and the kind of pressure that can make clean chances feel impossible. Then. in the 70th minute. Mbappé finally found the opening he needed. converting a penalty to send Les Bleus into the quarterfinals for the fourth straight time.
France now turns to Morocco, with the quarterfinal scheduled for Thursday in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
The sequence that decided it began with Diego Gomez. After a video review, Gomez was called for tripping, earning Paraguay’s defenders a penalty. Mbappé stepped up and stutter-stepped his way through the moment. scoring his 19th career World Cup goal in his 19th World Cup appearance. The strike put him one behind Lionel Messi of Argentina. the career record holder. with both players level at seven goals in this tournament to top the Golden Boot race. Mbappé previously won that award four years ago in Qatar, though Messi and Argentina beat France in the 2022 final.
France’s lead lasted, and needed to. Mbappé misfired on a breakaway attempt in the second half, and Manu Koné almost created a second punch with a top-corner shot. But goalkeeper Orlando Gill was there to knock it away after Ousmane Dembélé wiped Koné out in the netting only moments earlier.
Gill’s work didn’t end with that save. He also stopped two strong attempts by Mbappé in second-half stoppage time, turning what might have been a nervy finish into something France could ultimately control.
For all the talk that World Cup hydration breaks can disrupt rhythm, they were a lifeline in Philadelphia. During breaks. sprinklers showered the Kentucky bluegrass field. and at halftime the concourse drew crowds—more than in any of the five other World Cup games played before 68. 000-plus fans at Lincoln Financial Field. Spectators fled for shade and refuge from the sun. some likely hoping for anything to cut through the heat. not realizing the game would still demand endurance.
France entered the match with an attack that had looked unstoppable early. Les Bleus scored 13 goals in the first five games of the tournament and were 5-0 in this year’s competition. outscoring opponents 14-2. Against Paraguay. though. the first half turned into a battle Paraguay wanted—turn the contest into a rock fight. keep it physical. and make every inch feel earned.
Tempers flared when Andrés Cubas took down Mbappé, prompting a brief burst of pushing and shoving between the teams. Matías Galarza then threw his right elbow into Mbappé, sending him crashing to the grass. Even if France had momentum on the scoreboard in the tournament at large. Paraguay refused to let the match become smooth.
Paraguay’s confidence had a recent foundation. La Albirroja had advanced by beating Germany in a penalty shootout on Monday, the biggest upset of this World Cup. But on Saturday. their stubborn defending carried them through stretches—until the moment that required one small mistake to decide everything.
France’s route through the tournament has come with its own history. After defeating Croatia for the 2018 title, France lost to Argentina on penalty kicks in the 2022 final. Now, they move forward again, surviving another uncomfortable night.
Outside the stadium, the city leaned into the date. Philadelphia marked 250 years since the United States was founded exactly on July Fourth. and the atmosphere matched the calendar: flags. Uncle Sam hats. and tailgating that felt heavier than at any other games in Philadelphia. Idina Menzel. The Roots and DJ Jazzy Jeff also performed. stitching celebrations into the same day where football finally delivered the decisive moment.
Inside, after all the grinding and all the heat, the finish came down to one calm conversion. Mbappé’s penalty ensured France didn’t break under pressure—just long enough to step into the quarterfinals.
Mbappé France Paraguay World Cup quarterfinals Lincoln Financial Field Morocco Orlando Gill Diego Gomez heat warning
Crazy that it was 100 degrees and they still played. Mbappé really be carrying.
I don’t get how a quarterfinal is Thursday when the article says July Fourth at Lincoln Financial Field?? Like they time travel now. Also if it was a penalty for tripping, that happens in every match anyway.
So the guy tripped and then they did a video review and boom penalty… but wasn’t Mbappé the one who got fouled on that breakaway too? I feel like these calls are always in favor of the big teams. Morocco better watch out though.
Mbappé scoring his 19th career World Cup goal like that’s not even wild enough. And Messi is right behind him? I thought Messi was way ahead lol. Heat warning or not, France gonna France I guess. Also Orlando Gill saved it but it still says Paraguay defenders earned the penalty?? Sounds confusing.
