Jesse Marsch shoos camera away after Canada’s Morocco exit

Canada’s World Cup run ended in Houston on Saturday, July 4, and the final moments looked tense even after the match was over.

Morocco celebrated on the pitch after a 3-0 win in the round of 16. Canada, however, stayed facing its supporters. Players clapped in front of the fans who had flown down to watch them play at NRG Stadium.

In the middle of that scene, Jesse Marsch stepped in. A cameraperson was filming the team when Marsch shooed the person away as the coach gathered players to stand with him.

The refusal to let the camera linger appeared different from how Marsch handled postgame media access after Canada’s earlier match. On June 28, Canada beat South Africa 1-0, advancing the team into the round of 16. After that win, Marsch allowed the camera to remain in the huddle as he spoke to his players.

After the loss to Morocco, Marsch focused on the way Canada played—especially in the first half—and on the thin margin that separated his team from a better result.

“Across the pitch, we have 11 incredible performances in the first half,” Marsch said. “We were unlucky not to get the lead. We should have been on top of the game. We should have had the lead, and then it’s the fine details … but in terms of how we played … what an incredible performance.”

He added that he believed fans were “privileged” to have watched and rooted for this year’s Canadian World Cup team. Marsch also said Canada has to find more moments like Saturday if it wants to become better.

“What a great team,” Marsch said. “I’d rather be us than them. As good as Morocco is, I’d rather be us … I’m really proud of our guys. We went after the game. They’re hurting right now, but my goodness, I couldn’t be prouder.”

The sequence of moments—players applauding traveling supporters, Marsch pushing a camera away, then praising Canada’s effort—underscored how quickly this tournament can switch from belief to aftermath, even when the coach insists the performance itself wasn’t the problem.

  1. So he lets the camera stay after South Africa, but not after Morocco? Sounds like he was mad at somebody on the team or like the refs screwed them again or whatever.

  2. I don’t get it, players were already clapping for the fans and then coach is pushing a camera away… maybe he didn’t want the players to see themselves on TV? Or maybe the camera guy was doing too much? Also ‘privileged’ is an odd word for sports like… it’s their job?

  3. Coaches always act tough for the cameras and then get salty when the camera comes close lol. I’m guessing it’s like he didn’t want them to show the emotions after the 3-0. But also Canada only lost 3-0, could’ve been worse, so idk why the big reaction. NRG Stadium is just loud, maybe the camera was blocking something? Anyway, Morocco celebrating and Canada standing there is basically the whole story.
