Mbappé scores – Kylian Mbappé scored twice and set a World Cup knockout scoring record as France beat Sweden 3-0 at MetLife Stadium, booking a round-of-16 meeting with Paraguay. The victory also marked France’s first run of scoring three-plus goals in five straight World Cup

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — It was hot enough at MetLife Stadium to feel like a test of will before the ball even dropped, and for Sweden it turned into a full-body reminder of what happens when France’s attack is allowed to start clicking early.

On Tuesday night, Kylian Mbappé carried Les Bleus with a third two-goal game of this World Cup, powering a 3-0 win over Sweden that sets up a round of 16 match against Paraguay.

Mbappé’s first strike broke the game open in the 45th minute. After a brilliant crossover step. he scored the go-ahead goal. then returned in the 74th minute to add his sixth goal of the tournament and tie Lionel Messi for the World Cup scoring lead. Mbappé now has 18 goals in 18 World Cup games, one behind the Argentine’s career record of 19 in 29 matches.

Between the two moments from Mbappé, Bradley Barcola added France’s second goal in the 53rd minute, making it the first time a nation has scored three or more goals in five consecutive World Cup matches.

The numbers kept piling up. France outscored opponents 13-2. and Michael Olise has five assists. the most in a World Cup since Germany’s Thomas Hassler recorded five in 1994. Sweden captain Victor Lindelöf could only describe what it felt like for his team to watch France change gears. possession patterns. and tempo as if they were choosing the rhythm themselves.

“They are skilled at knowing when to change the pace and increase it, when to possess the ball, went to fall back,” Lindelöf said through a translator.

For Sweden coach Graham Potter, the scoreline did not hide the gap that had been visible all night. Potter praised France’s quality across the pitch and the threat they carry through their bench.

“I personally haven’t seen a better team,” Potter said. “The quality they have all over the pitch and then the options for them off the bench are very, very strong, so they’ve got as good a chance as anybody, I would suggest.”

France kept attacking even when Sweden looked briefly capable of holding shape. Mbappé struck a post in the 32nd minute, lifting both hands in disgust. Four minutes later, France nearly went ahead when Olise’s spectacular bicycle kick from just inside the penalty area clanked off a post.

After goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström tipped Olise’s shot just outside the post, France finished the move. Olise played a short corner kick to Ousmane Dembélé, who passed to Mbappé near the byline. Mbappé took a crossover step to get around Viktor Gyökeres and from just outside the 6-yard box sent a diagonal shot inside the far post.

The second goal came after a moment that cost Sweden. Gustaf Lagerbielke lost the ball ahead of France’s second goal, and Aurélien Tchouaméni played to Olise. Olise nutmegged Lagerbielke, and Barcola then sent the ball past Zetterström’s outstretched right hand.

France’s third goal arrived with the kind of attacking momentum that makes evenings feel longer for the opponent. Mbappé helped set it up with a backheel pass to Barcola. Barcola passed to Olise, who sent the ball forward as Mbappé sprinted into the penalty area. Mbappé took a touch and fired inside the far post.

Mbappé was taken off after being substituted in the 85th minute, and coach Didier Deschamps bowed when his star came to the bench. Deschamps’ focus stayed on the bigger mission.

“We’re on a mission — so am I with them,” Deschamps said through a translator.

Mbappé, speaking through a translator, made it clear he didn’t want the night reduced to his own output. Still, his impact was impossible to miss.

“The entire team is aware of what should be done,” Mbappé said. “It is a new competition that has started today. We did play well, but we were timid. We could have done better at the beginning.”

He also set a career scoring record specifically in World Cup knockout rounds, with his 10 knockout round goals coming two more than the previous high by Brazilian greats Leonidas and Ronaldo.

The context outside the stadium only added to the contrast inside it. The game kicked off at 5 p.m. in conditions described as 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius). sunny and humid. with poor air quality at the site of the July 19 final. Many fans in the club areas stayed inside their air-conditioned suites.

A crowd of 80,663 raised the record total for the expanded 104-match tournament above 5 million, with a majority of fans in France’s blue and a pocket in Sweden’s yellow at one end.

For Sweden, there was no denying the threat in front of them, even as Potter tried to frame the defeat without surrendering pride. After the final whistle, he said he didn’t consider it a disgrace to lose to France.

“I have no complaints to the players whatsoever. I said to them after the game I don’t think it’s a disgrace to lose to France. For us it’s about using this as a foundation to go forward and to be proud of what we’ve done so far.”

Potter had also described how close Sweden’s margins felt before running out of what he called the required miracles.

“I said I think we needed a couple of miracles. We had a couple, but we ran out of them,” Potter said.

Now the spotlight shifts quickly. France has outshot Sweden 25-7 in the first World Cup meeting between the nations, including 15-3 in the first half. The next match is already locked in: France plays Paraguay on July 4 in Philadelphia. The winner advances to a quarterfinal against Canada or Morocco five days later at Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Mbappé’s focus, at least for the next few minutes, stayed grounded in the here and now—because after the heat, even the best players want relief.

“I’m looking forward to the changing room and the AC,” Mbappé said just after the final whistle.

France, meanwhile, will be looking at the scoreboard and the knockout record and feeling something close to certainty. Sweden will be looking at the moments where the posts, the nutmeg, the lost ball and the timing all tilted the match toward France’s next step.
