Mbappé drives France toward crucial Iraq clash in Philadelphia

France vs – France face Iraq in a Group I World Cup match in Philadelphia on Monday at 5pm (21:00 GMT), with Kylian Mbappé leading the way after scoring twice against Senegal. France are one win from securing Round of 32 qualification, while Iraq—at the World Cup for the
Philadelphia is set for one of those nights where the margins feel enormous.
On Monday. France take on Iraq in FIFA World Cup 2026 Group I at the Philadelphia Stadium. Pennsylvania. with kickoff at 5pm (21:00 GMT). France arrive already close to safety—one win could secure their place in the Round of 32—while Iraq begin this tournament moment carrying the weight of a heavy opening defeat and the urgency of a group that offers almost no room for error.
The storyline runs through Kylian Mbappé. Two goals from the France captain helped his side recover from a shaky first half in their opening match against Senegal in New Jersey, before Didier Deschamps’ team finished 3-1 winners.
Now Iraq are back under the floodlights too. The team is at the World Cup for the first time since 1986, and after suffering a 4-1 defeat to Norway in their opener, they face a second, brutal test: Qatar 2022 runners-up France before their final group game against Senegal.
France can go through the gears
France’s win over Senegal played out like a match with two different faces. In the first half, the Qatar 2022 finalists were a shadow of themselves, with star players failing to match expectations. Then the second half arrived, sharper and more decisive.
Mbappé turned the game with two brilliant goals to become France’s all-time top scorer. Just as importantly, the turnaround wasn’t only built on reputations. Substitute Bradley Barcola made an instant impact off the bench, scoring his first-ever World Cup goal two minutes after coming on.
Barcola’s timing is now part of the tension heading into the Iraq match: Deschamps has a squad loaded with options, but his instinct at major tournaments has often been to keep the structure intact rather than chase chaos.
Deschamps may tweak, not tinker
Deschamps is unlikely to deviate from stability, despite the range of choices in his playing group.
The most likely changes are expected on the left flank. Barcola is set to replace Desire Doue in attack, while Lucas Digne is tipped to come in for Theo Hernandez at left back.
Another shift could come in midfield. Deschamps has held lengthy discussions with Manu Kone in recent days, and the 25-year-old was paired with Adrien Rabiot during training this week—signals that Kone could be handed a starting role.
If this match tilts, it may be because France can shift gears without breaking their rhythm.
Iraq face another huge challenge
Iraq’s route to this World Cup has been exhausting and relentless. They were the final team to book their place at the 2026 World Cup, following a gruelling campaign that saw them play a record number of qualifiers.
That earned them a spot in Group I, widely viewed as the hardest of the 12 groups at the tournament.
After Norway’s 4-1 win over Iraq in Boston, the group picture is already unforgiving. Norway sit top of Group I on goal difference after hammering Iraq 4-1. France are second on three points. Senegal and Iraq are both without points and sit third and fourth respectively.
Two teams from each group—plus the eight best third-placed teams—proceed to the Round of 32, which has been introduced at this World Cup for the first time. But Iraq’s next two games make the math immediate: they already know the stakes of their final task.
To avoid elimination, Graham Arnold’s side face a monumental assignment: a draw or a win against France, the kind of opponent whose experience is built on deep tournament runs. The French, meanwhile, have reached the last two World Cup finals.
France are overwhelming favourites in the prediction
The numbers from Opta’s supercomputer make this feel lopsided. France have an 88.5 percent chance of victory, with Iraq at three percent. The model also gives France an 8.5 percent chance of a draw at Boston Stadium on Monday.
Opta’s wider prediction places France with the best chance of winning the World Cup, moving them ahead of Spain, who were the pre-tournament favourites.
Still, Group I doesn’t care what the supercomputer expects. It only cares what happens on the pitch.
Form guide and what it suggests
France’s recent run reads like momentum. Their last five games show W-W-L-W-W. with the only slip-up coming against Ivory Coast in a shock defeat in a World Cup warm-up. Iraq’s last five games—L-L-D-W-W—show a team without a win in their last three matches after back-to-back defeats to Norway and Venezuela. Their last win came in a pre-World Cup friendly against Andorra in May.
Head-to-head has no history—until now
This is the first time France and Iraq have ever met in an international match.
Team news keeps the pressure tight
France team news points to small but deliberate adjustments. Deschamps is set to have Barcola start after he came off the bench against Senegal. Digne and Kone are also tipped to start.
For Iraq, Ali Jasim is available to start after coming off against Norway with a knock. Ahmed Basil could start in goal in place of Jalal Hassan.

France vs Iraq Mbappé FIFA World Cup 2026 Group I Philadelphia Stadium Round of 32 Didier Deschamps Iraq at World Cup 1986
Wait… Iraq is playing in Philly??
Mbappé scoring twice is cool but I don’t get how Iraq is already “one of those nights” like what does that even mean. Also 5pm Monday in Philadelphia Stadium, is that the same stadium from the last World Cup? Sounds like a big deal either way.
So Mbappé is basically carrying France and then Iraq is just doomed because they lost first? That’s kinda how it always goes, like one bad game and suddenly everyone acts like it’s over. I swear they should’ve just let France qualify automatically if they already won 3-1.
I feel like the headline is weird like “crucial Iraq clash” — why is it always called a clash when it’s just soccer. But Philadelphia getting a World Cup match is awesome, I just hope people don’t act crazy. Also is Mbappé definitely playing, because I heard he got hurt or something? Idk.
