Mattingly joins Dodgers staff for 2026 NL All-Star

Interim manager Don Mattingly confirmed he was asked by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts to join the NL coaching staff for the 2026 All-Star Game on July 14. The announcement came ahead of Sunday’s game against the White Sox as All-Star voting begins and the Phill
Don Mattingly said the invitation landed in the middle of a season schedule that keeps moving—one start, one game, one day at a time. Still, when he spoke before Sunday’s game against the White Sox, he made it clear what July 14 represents.
Mattingly. serving as interim manager. confirmed that Dodgers manager Dave Roberts—who will be managing the National League for the 2026 All-Star Game presented by Mastercard—has asked Mattingly to be a member of the NL coaching staff on July 14. “Any time you can be involved,” Mattingly said, “the All-Star Game obviously is an honor.”.
It’s an environment that carries a childhood pull for Mattingly. He described what the All-Star festivities mean: “As a kid. you grow up watching the Home Run Derby and you watch the All-Star Game. just all the festivities and everything that goes into it. ” he said. “All the best players in the world, all in one place at the same time, man. So it’s cool to be invited and be able to represent the organization and our families in that type of environment. That’s what I’m looking forward to.”.
Mattingly’s connection to the All-Star spotlight goes beyond the moment. He was a six-time All-Star during his 14-year playing career. and he previously served on Bruce Bochy’s coaching staff for the NL at the 2015 All-Star Game in Cincinnati. That earlier experience still sits close to his memory—especially the way personal heroes show up in everyday baseball life. “Rod Carew was on that team — he was kind of the guy I watched as a kid. kind of patterned my hitting after. ” Mattingly said. “And Rod signed a bat for me and brought it to me. So probably just making that first one and having Rod reach out.”.
For the 2026 All-Star Game, the setting adds its own weight. The Phillies will host the Midsummer Classic for the first time since 1996, and there’s already a sense that the night could become a story fans tell for years. Mattingly suggested the significance plainly, calling the event “a big deal.”
“Obviously, the All-Star Game is a big deal,” he said. “It’s kind of like an awards show almost for MLB, right? It showcases your players and your game throughout the whole country, and on a big stage. So I think it’s great, and it actually gives a chance for Philly to showcase, so it’d be great.”
The Phillies, entering Sunday’s play, come into the voting period with a stack of recognizable benchmarks. The team has the MLB home run leader in Kyle Schwarber (23). the ERA leader in Cristopher Sánchez (1.46). and the batting leader in Brandon Marsh (.335). Closer Jhoan Duran has 15 saves and a 1.31 ERA. Zack Wheeler is a perennial All-Star candidate. entering with a 5-1 record and a 2.31 ERA in eight starts. and Bryce Harper brings a .866 OPS with 14 home runs.

The coaching invitation is already set for July 14. Now the rest of the equation—who will step under the bright lights as players—belongs to fans, counting days toward a game that, for Mattingly, feels both familiar and new.

So does this mean he’s actually managing or just like… hanging out in the dugout?
Mattingly always seemed like he’d end up coaching something important. Kinda wild they’re doing All-Star stuff while he’s interim managing. I guess Dave Roberts really picked him.
Wait I thought Mattingly was getting replaced like already? Interim manager means he’s temporary so how is he also doing coaching staff for the All-Star… sounds contradictory but whatever baseball is confusing.
Home Run Derby and All-Star Game is always the same thing to me, just rich guys hitting balls. But hey, Mattingly as a former All-Star and also on Bochy’s staff makes sense. Also “Phill Don Mattingly” is kinda funny typo unless that’s what they mean? Anyway July 14 will be entertaining I guess.
