Wind advisories hit 4 a.m.; severe weather nears

wind advisory – After a calm stretch, Syracuse and central New York face a surge in wind and a narrow early-morning window for severe weather Thursday. Wind advisories begin at 4 a.m., followed by a warm front bringing rain, heavier downpours, thunder, lightning, gustier wind

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The morning won’t start gently.

Wind is set to ramp up before sunrise Thursday, with wind advisories kicking in at 4 a.m. for strong winds out of the south and southwest. The setup is tied to a large pressure change between low pressure to the west and a Bermuda high pressure system to the south and east. creating the kind of airflow that makes trees and powerlines feel far more exposed.

On top of the wind, a warm front will move through and bring more than just clouds. Rain is expected with heavier downpours, along with thunder, lightning, and gustier winds. Most of central New York sits under a marginal risk for severe weather—rated similarly to a 1 on a scale where 1 is very low chance but not zero. and 5 is the highest.

Marginal doesn’t mean nothing can happen. With a warm front. air can sometimes move in different directions at different heights. allowing for spinning or twisting that may lead to a tornado warning or two. If that doesn’t materialize. the threat still isn’t off the table: a few severe thunderstorm warnings are possible. with high winds aloft potentially brought down to the surface through downdrafts.

The tightest window for the more dangerous weather runs from 4 a.m. to 9 a.m. Thursday. During that time, storms could bring tree and powerline damage that leads to a few power outages. A tornado warning is possible as well as small hail, and flash flood warnings too.

Once the warm front clears the area by mid-morning Thursday—by 9 a.m.—the immediate threat should ease. By then, the sun comes out and temperatures climb to near 80, with a couple more storms still possible in the afternoon. Otherwise, conditions are expected to be partly sunny.

For people worried about the wind even if storms don’t intensify. it’s not just the storm time that matters. The forecast calls out futurecast wind gust concerns at several hours Thursday—4 a.m. 6 a.m. 8 a.m. 9:30 a.m. 1 p.m. 6 p.m. and again at 8 p.m. While exact gust numbers are not stated in the message. the warning is clear: any high wind gusts can easily run 10 to 15 miles per hour higher with any thunderstorm crossing the area.

After Thursday’s active stretch, the weekend plan looks steadier. Friday through Sunday—including Father’s Day and the first day of summer at 4:24 a.m.—the weather is expected to be quiet. Most days will bring clouds at times, some sun, and only the smallest chance of sprinkles or a brief shower. From Friday through Sunday. it will not be raining. and plans outdoors should be fine with comfortable temperatures during the day and at night.

If you’re trying to judge how much to worry tonight, the schedule is built around that early-morning window. Updates are set for the forecast update at 10 p.m. on CW6 and on NBC3 at CBS5 News at 11 p.m. Wednesday. Meteorologist Sam Postitch is also scheduled to be LIVE on NBC3 from 4 a.m. to 7 a.m., tracking the high wind gusts alongside any severe thunderstorms that may move through the area.
