Marco Rubio would ‘watch every college football game’ with a week off

Secretary of State Marco Rubio doesn’t get a week off from work very often, but if he did, it’d be spent watching college football.

“My wife’s gonna hate this answer,” he said in an interview on “My View with Lara Trump” July 28. “I’d love to sit down and watch every college football game from noon eastern until the west coast games end at 2 a.m. eastern.”

Rubio played college football himself, attending NAIA Tarkio College in Missouri before the school went under after his freshman season in 1992. He then transferred and earned his undergraduate degree at Florida, where his son, Anthony Rubio, is a preferred walk-on running back.

The Miami native also attended the 2025-26 national championship game between Indiana and Miami. He was rooting on the Hurricanes, having earned his Juris Doctor from the university, despite being rivals with the Gators.

Rubio hasn’t shied away from sharing his college football thoughts in the past. He was openly critical of the College Football Playoff back in December, noting it would have been unfair if Miami had missed the CFP with a 10-2 record.

The Hurricanes controversially entered the CFP field over Notre Dame despite neither team playing during conference championship week.

“I’m a Florida Gator, but if the University of Miami gets screwed out of the College Football Playoffs, after going 10-2 and beating Notre Dame, the whole thing should be scrapped and (Trump) is gonna have to take over next year,” Rubio said.

Anthony Rubio, a redshirt junior, has 11 carries for 59 yards with a touchdown in his career, with his lone score coming against Tulane in Florida’s 2024 Gasparilla Bowl win over Tulane. He rushed for 27 yards in the Gators’ 55-0 win over Long Island to open the 2025 season.

Rubio might not end up binge posting on X during college football Saturdays like the masses once his political career ends, but it sounds like he’s be glued to the TV when the time comes.
