US Secretary Marco Rubio met Ethiopia’s foreign minister to discuss conflict risks, security cooperation, and trade, including airport investment plans.
Commerce, Regional Security and US-Ethiopia partnerships discussed Toronto – The U.S.. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday met with Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timotheos.. According to Spokesperson Tommy Pigott, they met on the sidelines of the U.S.-Ethiopia Bilateral Structured Dialogue.. Fears of renewed conflict in the Horn of Africa appears to be one of the issues discussed.. “The Secretary underscored Ethiopia’s important role in promoting the resolution and deescalation of conflict across East Africa,”
the spokesperson stated.. The United States has been undertaking diplomatic effort with the aim to avert another conflict in north Ethiopia as the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) removed Interim Administration – which was a Pretoria Agreement arrangement – by force saying the terms of the president was extended unilaterally in “violation of the agreement.” The TPLF is this time supported by the Eritrean government with whom the U.S.. government has reportedly started a rapprochement
with a possibility of lifting sanctions which Eritrea welcomed while requesting explanation why the sanction was imposed in the first place.. Apart from TPLF and Eritrea, tense relations are developing between Ethiopia and Sudan as the latter made claims that drones fired from Ethiopia attacked the Airport in Sudan.. Ethiopia denied the allegation.. The meeting between Marco Rubio and Gedion also discussed “U.S.-Ethiopia security partnership and the significant steps taken to advance commercial opportunities between
our nations,” as Tommy Pigott reported.. The United States has recently expressed strong interest in business relations with Ethiopia including in the transpiration section.. The U.S.. is poised to chip-in for the $12.5 billion dollars Bishoftu International Airport construction.. It is expected to serve about 120 million passengers a year when completed.. The terms of the loan arrangement and the amount the U.S.. is chipping is not disclosed to the public although Ethiopian officials last
month have signed an official agreement in the United Statutes on the sidelines of the IMF and World Bank Spring Meeting.. Meanwhile, Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday announced that Ethiopia and the United States of America signed a Bilateral Structured Dialogue (BSD) Framework in Washington, D.C… it is “aimed at strengthening relations between the two countries, while expanding opportunities for cooperation on bilateral, regional, and other issues of mutual interest,” the Ministry stated..
