Major League Baseball brings back the classic TWIB
So, the folks at Major League Baseball decided it was time to bring back an old favorite. You remember “This Week in Baseball,” right? The classic show that basically defined the sport for a generation. According to Misryoum analysis, they’re dusting it off—giving it a modern digital coat of paint—and bringing it straight to your X feed every Friday morning at 11 a.m. Chicago time.
It’s a bit of a nostalgia trip, honestly. The show first kicked off back in 1977, running for half an hour with the late Mel Allen at the helm. He was the voice of the game for so many of us. I remember hearing his distinct, gravelly tone during those Saturday morning highlights—the smell of freshly cut grass and stale cereal, maybe?—it sticks with you. Misryoum reporting notes the show kept running until 1998 and then popped up again for a second stint between 2000 and 2011.
But this new version? It’s shorter. We’re looking at five to ten-minute clips now, which makes sense for the current attention economy or whatever we’re calling it these days. Actually, they’re sticking to the roots though, keeping the old segments like the bloopers—everybody loves a good blooper reel—along with player profiles and those classic “TWIB Notes.”
Kait Maniscalco is taking over the hosting duties for this run. The series is going to be produced by MLB studios, so it shouldn’t feel too far off from the original style, even with the new platform. Wait, will it still have that same theme song? I really hope they keep the music.
Anyway, it’s going to run through the entirety of the postseason. Catch it on the main MLB account or @XOriginals.
It’s definitely a different way to watch, but maybe the nostalgia hits harder on a screen in your pocket anyway.
