Maher takes Twain prize as Trump clashes echo at Kennedy Center

Maher Twain – Bill Maher was honored with the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center on Sunday night—while Donald Trump’s fingerprints on the venue’s upheaval stayed front and center through jokes, attendees, and an ongoing legal fight over the removal of
Bill Maher walked onto the Kennedy Center stage to accept the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. and for a moment the room sounded like pure comedy. Then. right as he began taking in the spotlight. Matt Friend—an impersonator of President Donald Trump—stepped to the stage and. in Trump’s voice. joked that he would accept the award himself.
Trump didn’t attend the ceremony. But his absence didn’t calm the air. Other comedians and entertainers. including Whitney Cummings. Jay Leno. and Woody Harrelson. riffed on Trump and the wider culture around him. all unfolding in a venue that has become a symbol of what his second-term effort has tried to do to Washington.
Maher, the guest of honor, also landed harder jokes inside the laughter. He called out “groupthink” and said, “If you hang around long enough and create something important enough, everyone hates you at some point.”
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick was the most prominent administration presence in the hall. Political guests included Paul Dans, who helped shape the Republican Project 2025 agenda. Democrats were represented as well, including Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania.
The Kennedy Center’s future hung over the evening. Shortly after Trump returned to the White House in January 2025. he fired much of the center’s leadership and installed a board largely composed of allies. That board named Trump as chairman. and it added his name to the building’s iconic facade—sparking a legal battle over the extent of the president’s power.
Trump later said the Kennedy Center would close in July for a two-year renovation. But in May, U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper upended that plan by ruling that Trump’s name was illegally added to the building and ordered it removed. Cooper also blocked the closure.
Trump’s name has come down from the building in compliance with the judge’s order. but the area where the letters once spelled out the president’s name is now shrouded in a tarp. The full closure remains on hold. and lawyers for the Kennedy Center have said they are not planning for now to build out programming.
Cooper has asked for an update next month on how long the tarp will remain on the building. For now, the final scheduled event in the Kennedy Center’s well-known Concert Hall is “The Freedom Gathering: A Musical Celebration” on July 3.
At the Twain gala, the legal fight became something the audience could feel—because comedians turned it into a running joke. Harrelson, for instance, joked “we fixed that” in a nod to the court order calling for Trump’s name to be removed from the building.
Before the ceremony. Lutnick said Trump “wants to make this building sensational.” Leno. walking the red carpet ahead of the event. described Trump’s moves as both “hilarious” and about “vanity.” He added. “It’s not a war. ” and said it wasn’t “people getting killed” and wasn’t “anti Semitism.” Leno continued. “It’s a silly thing covering a name. I mean what’s funnier than that?. I mean it’s just like, you know it’s high school with money.”.
Friend said he sensed a “hunger games vibe” as he entered the building, calling the changes Trump has pushed for “crazy.”
The choice of Maher as the Twain honoree also carried its own spark. Maher and Trump have had a fraught relationship for years. Before Trump filed for politics, he sued Maher for $5 million in 2013, alleging breach of contract. On Leno’s “The Tonight Show. ” Maher said he would give $5 million to the charity of Trump’s choice if Trump could prove he was not “the spawn of his mother having sex with an orangutan.” Trump claimed that when he provided his birth certificate. Maher did not pay up. prompting the lawsuit. and Trump ended up dropping it.
That tension flared again earlier this year. Trump claimed on social media that he wasted time sitting down for a meal with Maher last year.
On the eve of the weekend, Maher hosted Vice President JD Vance on his show. Vance. promoting a book. said he watches the show and laughed at Maher’s monologue “even though you were making fun of me.” During the interview. Maher pressed Vance on the Iran war. immigration enforcement. and election conspiracy theories. Maher told Vance, “You guys have two outcomes that an election can be,” adding, “Either we win or they cheated. That s—- has to stop.”.
The Twain Prize ceremony will air on Netflix on July 21.

So Trump got mad again? That building is literally just a theater lol.
I didn’t watch, but the headline said Trump’s fingerprints stayed front and center and that sounds exhausting. Bill Maher always acting like he’s the only one willing to tell the truth too. Also why is there a legal fight about a comedy award??
Wait so Maher got the Mark Twain Prize but it’s like… funded by Trump now? That’s what I saw on TikTok anyway. If they removed leadership then why does it matter who jokes about what on stage, just let the man laugh. But I guess people can’t stop making everything political.
Kenndy Center drama plus comedians roasting Trump… I mean it’s kind of expected at this point. Howard Lutnick being there is wild though, like who invited him? And the part about adding his name to the facade and then fighting in court sounds like it’s gonna take forever. Also the impersonator stepping on stage in Trump’s voice??? I’d be laughing but also annoyed, because I can already feel the outrage news cycle starting.
