Lynx’s Olivia Miles wins May Rookie of the Month

For Olivia Miles, the season’s first taste of recognition arrived with a number-heavy June. On Wednesday, June 3, the WNBA announced that the Minnesota Lynx guard earned Rookie of the Month honors for May.

Miles’ month was built on balance. During May, she averaged 15.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 1.5 steals per contest. She scored in double digits across eight games, including four outings with 15 or more points. Playmaking was a constant too—she recorded seven games with five or more assists.

As June begins, her production hasn’t cooled. Miles is tied for seventh in the WNBA in assists per game (6.3). while ranking 10th in steals per matchup (1.7) and 20th in points per game (15.8). The honor is also notable because it’s the first league recognition of her professional career—an opening flourish that echoes the higher expectations attached to her start.

The league’s monthly awards didn’t stop with Minnesota. Reigning MVP A’ja Wilson was named Western Conference Player of the Month, marking her 14th time winning the award. In May, the Las Vegas Aces star averaged 24.8 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game.

In the East, Atlanta Dream guard Allisha Gray took home Eastern Conference Player of the Month honors. A three-time All-Star, Gray averaged 20.4 points per game along with 4.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists per matchup.

Portland’s momentum was rewarded on the sideline as well. The WNBA named new Portland Fire head coach Alex Sarama Coach of the Month for May. Under Sarama’s leadership. Portland went 6-4. led the league in forced turnovers (16.7) and points off turnovers (19.4) per game. and allowed 62.9 opponent field goal attempts per game. The Fire also ranked top five in steals per matchup (8.1), field goal % (45.7) and free throw % (81.1).

A month of individual brilliance and team impact emerges from the awards list: Miles’ all-around stat line, Wilson and Gray’s conference-leading production, and Sarama’s early imprint on Portland’s pressure and efficiency all landed in the same May window.
