For anyone who’s ever fallen for a story because of the people inside it, “The Love Hypothesis” is coming with a built-in origin myth. The romance movie traces its roots to a “Star Wars” love story—specifically fan fiction.
Author Ali Hazelwood originally published the tale that would later become her New York Times bestseller as a work of fan fiction about the relationship between Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and Rey (Daisy Ridley) in the “Star Wars” franchise. She later reworked the story, adjusted the character names, and “voila”—“The Love Hypothesis” was born.
Now, Amazon MGM Studios is bringing Hazelwood’s bestseller to Prime Video, and the first teaser trailer has arrived after premiering at Prime Video’s Obsessed Fest event on Saturday.
The film stars Lili Reinhart as Olive, a Ph.D. candidate, and Tom Bateman as Adam, an intimidating professor. The twist is irresistible: Bateman is Daisy Ridley’s husband. In the story. Olive’s real-life complications start with a painful discovery—her best friend. Rachel Marsh. has fallen for Olive’s crush. Nicholas Duvernay.
Reeling from that, Olive impulsively kisses Adam and kicks off what begins as a fake relationship. It’s the kind of arrangement that’s easy to start and harder to keep contained—because it turns into something neither of them can pretend isn’t real.
The screenplay is by Sarah Rothschild, and the adaptation is directed by Claire Scanlon, known for “The Office” and “Set It Up.”
Amazon MGM Studios will release “The Love Hypothesis” directly to streaming on Prime Video on Sept. 23.
The movie also lands as Amazon presses forward with a YA strategy that has been growing on the platform. including shows such as “The Summer I Turned Pretty. ” and the streamer’s rapid expansion of teen and YA-centric adaptations into TV. The latest hit, “Off Campus,” has surpassed “TSITP” as the streamer’s third-highest TV launch ever.
At the Obsessed Fest kickoff event on Friday. Day VP of International Kelly Day summed up the push with a promise aimed squarely at young women: “We’ve crafted a bold and broad vision to become the most beloved streaming destination for young women. creating an essential space for them to feel seen. heard and celebrated.”.
