The first call came at 7:36 a.m. Friday from a Trader Joe’s on California and Hyde streets. What began as a reported theft attempt ended on the asphalt in San Francisco’s Nob Hill neighborhood, where a Lexus SUV ran over a theft suspect and two officers before stopping.

San Francisco Police Department officers responded to the grocery store after a theft was reported. according to a statement from the department. The department said the officers attempted to make an arrest in the alleged theft, but the suspect ran away. The officers followed and a physical altercation broke out. leading to all three people ending up on the ground in the roadway.

Graphic video of the incident, posted on social media, shows the chaos of that moment. In the footage, one person lies motionless in the street as one of the officers stands back up and bystanders gather. The police statement said the other officer was pinned under the vehicle.

Firefighters removed that officer from under the vehicle while paramedics rendered aid and transported all three patients to the hospital. the statement said. Despite life-saving efforts. the initial theft suspect—who had been struck by the vehicle—succumbed to his injuries and was declared deceased.

Both officers were taken to a hospital, where they were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries as of Friday morning. The driver of the Lexus “remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation,” the department said.

As of Saturday morning, authorities had not publicly released the names of the people involved or provided an update on the officers’ status beyond the Friday morning treatment information. The police department also had not said whether the driver had been arrested or charged.

A police representative told KTVU Fox 2 San Francisco that the vehicle “was unrelated to the theft incident. ” and a reporter for the TV station said in a Friday broadcast that the station had learned “not a lot of detail about the injuries.” The broadcast said the two officers—described as a rookie officer and a field training officer—were in stable condition being treated for their injuries.

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie took to social media Friday morning after the incident. He said he had “spoken with both officers today” and that he is “wishing them a full and speedy recovery.” Lurie added. “Any loss of life is a tragedy. ” and said he is “grateful to the first responders who acted quickly to render aid to everyone involved.”.

The San Francisco Police Department said it was investigating the crash and the circumstances leading up to it. The department urged anyone with relevant information to call 1-415-575-4444 or text tips beginning with “SFPD” to TIP411. Tips can be made anonymously.

The immediate question for investigators now is what the video shows in real time—how a pursuit following a reported theft escalated into a physical struggle in the roadway, and how quickly a vehicle ended up running over all three people before stopping.

  1. I saw the video floating around and it looks like everyone was just getting shoved around. How does a theft at Trader Joe’s end with officers under a car… seems like something got missed.

  2. Not to be that guy but if the suspect ran away then why are the cops chasing into the street like that? I’m guessing the driver sped up on purpose though… or maybe it was an accidental hit. Either way it’s just a mess.

  3. Nob Hill and Trader Joe’s really be the setting for chaos lately. I don’t know if the driver was trying to help or whatever but “pinned under the vehicle” sounds insane. Also I heard a different version where the cops were the ones who caused it, so idk what to believe anymore. Hopefully they release names because the story feels incomplete.
