Let there be light: Pepco says it’s restored power to 99% of customers who were in the dark after Thursday’s storms – WTOP News
The Pepco electric utility said Sunday that power has been restored to 99% of customers who lost electricity during Thursday’s thunderstorms.
The remaining outages are expected to be resolved by Sunday evening.
Tens of thousands of residents across the region were without power after Thursday’s severe storms brought damaging wind gusts near 70 mph, lightning and heavy rain. In one storm-related incident, a 12-year-old boy was hospitalized after a tree fell onto his Kettering home in Prince George’s County.

More than 500 Pepco employees, contractors and support staff were working around the clock since severe storms moved through the D.C. region, according to the utility.
Crews have been clearing downed trees and debris from electrical equipment, assessing storm damage and repairing or replacing damaged equipment across the District and Prince George’s County.
“We know how difficult and disruptive it is for customers, families and businesses to be without power, especially after severe weather,” Pepco Chief Operating Officer Rodney Oddoye said in a statement.
Oddoye said crews have been working “safely and as quickly as possible” to restore service despite challenging conditions, thanking customers for their patience.
Pepco said crews will remain in the field until power is restored to all affected customers.
