By the time The Mummy’s first weekend numbers landed, it was already clear Warner Bros. was betting on a familiar kind of dread—one Lee Cronin knows how to modernize.
Cronin’s latest horror film, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, premiered in theaters on April 17 and moved quickly through its opening run. It earned $13.5 million domestically and $21.5 million internationally for a worldwide box office total of $34 million in its first weekend.
The story behind the jump scares is built around a disappearance that doesn’t stay buried. Lee Cronin’s The Mummy stars Jack Reynor and Laia Costa as Charlie and Larissa Canon. The couple raises their two children in Cairo, with Charlie working as a television journalist on assignment in Egypt. One day, while their daughter Katie (Emily Mitchell) plays in the family’s backyard, she disappears without a trace.
Eight years later, the Cannons—now moved home to Arizona after their daughter’s disappearance—receive a call from the U.S. Embassy in Egypt. Katie has been found in a 3,000-year-old sarcophagus.
What they don’t know: Katie was subjected to a terrifying ritual. She emerges from her slumber in a catatonic state that rapidly shifts into a living nightmare for the family.
That nightmare is now moving beyond theaters. Having dropped to 178 North American theaters over the weekend. Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is nearing the end of its domestic theatrical run. Through Sunday, it has earned $29 million domestically and $59.1 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $88.1 million.
With a worldwide total now clearing the $88 million mark, the film’s financial picture looks modest—but not a failure. The movie was released by Warner Bros. and came with a production budget of $22 million before marketing expenses, according to Deadline.
Still, expectations were higher inside the studio walls. The article notes that Warner Bros. likely had greater hopes for The Mummy. especially after Cronin’s previous film for the studio—2023’s Evil Dead Rise—racked up $67.3 million domestically and $79.9 million internationally for a global gross of $147.2 million. against a $15.2 million production budget before marketing.
The comparisons don’t stop there: Evil Dead Rise was produced by the original Evil Dead franchise’s filmmakers Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert, and it also starred Bruce Campbell.
Cronin’s The Mummy, meanwhile, is already preparing its next audience. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment announced that Lee Cronin’s The Mummy will be released on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, May 19.
For viewers, the price is set at $24.99 for purchase on PVOD. Digital rentals are typically $5 less than purchase prices. meaning the film should be available to rent for a 48-hour period for $19.99. The PVOD release will be available on such digital platforms as Apple TV. Fandango at Home. Prime Video and YouTube Movies & TV.
The release schedule doesn’t end there. The film will also be released on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on July 14.
