LeBron’s agent: 10-12 teams ready if contract fails

10-12 teams – Rich Paul says at least 10 to 12 teams have already reached out about signing LeBron James if he can’t agree to a new contract with the Lakers before free agency begins June 30—while Paul also pushes back on ongoing rumors, saying “there’s been zero conversati

Friday night, the speculation around LeBron James didn’t just swirl—it picked up a new kind of urgency. On The Pat McAfee Show. James’ agent. Rich Paul. said incoming calls have come from at least 10 teams and as many as 12. all tied to one key condition: if James can’t work out a new contract with the Lakers before the start of free agency on June 30.

Paul didn’t name any of the teams, but he described the level of interest in unmistakably personal terms. “There have been incoming calls from every team with the excitement of possibly him playing for them,” Paul said. “So. at 41 years of age. going on 42. that’s something to be extremely proud about. and it’s one of those things that’s like ‘Wow. even at 42 I’m still wanted.’ That’s admirable. Without naming names, I would say about 10, 12 teams.”.

That interest lands in a moment when the calendar is starting to tighten. Free agency is a little more than two weeks away, and the leaguewide chatter about where James could go next has already gotten loud.

Paul’s message. though. is that the rumors moving faster than the facts don’t match how decisions are actually made. Although some possible destinations have been widely reported. Paul told McAfee that none of those reports have any basis in fact. and he repeated that stance on his Game Over podcast on the Ringer. “There’s nobody that knows anything about anything that pertains to LeBron,” Paul said. “All these reports, nobody knows. They’re just speculating. They put out salaries, nobody knows. There’s been zero conversations and there won’t be conversations until I have a conversation with the man himself.”.

Even with names not included, the conversation inevitably points to two widely discussed possibilities.

One is Golden State. There has been repeated speculation that James might want to end his career playing alongside Stephen Curry with the Warriors. after their Team USA run together at the 2024 Olympics—where they won a gold medal. Steve Kerr coached that team. and James has a strong relationship with Draymond Green. which has made the idea of a fit feel plausible. But Golden State’s offer. if it comes in the open market. would be limited to around $15MM through the mid-level exception unless there’s a sign-and-trade or a massive roster overhaul.

The other frequent storyline is Cleveland. It has been suggested that James would like to return to the city where he was drafted in 2003 and delivered the Cavaliers’ only NBA title in 2016. Still. the Cavaliers are described as already having an expensive roster in place. which would make it difficult for them to offer more than a veteran’s minimum deal without making significant roster changes.

What complicates all of it—beyond money and roster construction—is how little the timing window is giving the Lakers. Paul’s comments hinge on one deadline: whether a new contract with L.A. can be worked out before June 30. After that, he made clear that conversations don’t begin in earnest until he speaks directly with James.

While age is part of the public debate, Paul also made it part of his framing. James is coming off his 22nd straight All-Star appearance. He averaged 20.9 points. 6.1 rebounds. and 7.2 assists per night in 60 games and helped the Lakers claim the fourth seed in the West. In the playoffs, with Luka Doncic unavailable and Austin Reaves also dealing with an injury, James led L.A. past Houston in the first round. The Lakers then fell to Oklahoma City.

For now, the most concrete thing Paul offered wasn’t a destination—it was momentum. Calls have already been coming in. and 10 to 12 teams are in that early orbit if a deal with the Lakers doesn’t happen before free agency. At the same time. Paul insists the loudest rumors aren’t information: they’re speculation. and he says “there’s been zero conversations” until he talks with James.

In the space of a few sentences, the league went from guessing to waiting. The calls are real. The reports aren’t. And with June 30 closing in, the next move for James—and what it does to every team that’s been waiting—could land faster than anyone wants to admit.

  1. 10-12 teams calling?? I’m like… is that even real or just leverage for the Lakers to pay more. Also June 30 is soon so everyone’s gonna panic post on Twitter anyway.

  2. So if they don’t sign by June 30 he’s gone, right? That’s what it sounds like but the article’s kind of confusing. Like couldn’t the Lakers just offer later and then these teams just wait? Idk, rich guys and their contract games.

  3. Pat McAfee show… of course it’s gonna be drama. They say “zero conversations” but also “incoming calls from every team” like which one is it? I swear agents always say rumors are fake while making sure the rumors get louder. If LeBron wants out, he wants out, no matter what Rich Paul says.
