LAPD officer – Bodycam footage released by the LAPD shows an officer firing four times during a fatal shooting of a Canoga Park dog named Jameson. Mayor Karen Bass called the footage “disturbing and tragic,” directing reviews of LAPD use-of-force policies for dog encounters

The bodycam footage dropped on June 19, 2026, and it ends with a dog dying in a hallway—after an officer fires not once, not twice, but four times.

The shooting happened on Saturday in Canoga Park. when LAPD officers arrived at the apartment of Marie Marseille and encountered her golden retriever. Saint Bernard. and a poodle mix before the fatal moment involving her golden retriever. Jameson. The footage shows Jameson poking his head out and barking as officers first approach Marseille’s door. then slipping out into the hallway when she opens the door again and steps outside.

Mayor Karen Bass released a statement after the footage was made public. saying. “What I saw on the bodycam footage is disturbing and tragic.” She added that she and the Chief agreed it was important to release the bodycam footage swiftly. while the investigation is ongoing. Bass said she is “very concerned about why shots were fired and Jameson was killed. ” and argued that the incident “makes clear that while LAPD provides officers with written guidance on the use of force and pets. this is not enough.”.

Bass went further. directing the Police Commission President and the Chief to examine the Department’s Use of Force policy on Dog Encounters. Her order is meant to “determine best practices from around the country. ” and to use the situation to update LAPD’s “overall tactics. policies. and training related to the use of lethal force to increase safety for everyone – officers. Angelenos and their pets.”.

In the video. the officer wearing the bodycam appears spooked by Jameson’s size and begins yelling for Marseille to put him away. The officer says. “F***.” When another officer comments on how big Jameson is. the bodycam officer responds. “I ain’t gettin’ bit by that. bro.” Marseille then apologizes to the officers and tells them Jameson is not aggressive.

As Marseille steps back outside, Jameson slips past her and out into the hallway. He barks and runs toward the officer on bodycam, who fires multiple rounds. You can hear Jameson yelp after the first shot, while Marseille screams in horror and the officer continues to fire.

The shooting unfolded after a neighbor called police for a wellness check on Marseille—who. according to the footage description. was simply celebrating the Knicks’ NBA championship win. LAPD Captain Mike Bland said the department will be investigating the shooting over the “next several months.” He also said the Office of the Inspector General is conducting an additional. independent review of the investigation.

That sequence—dog encountered at an apartment door. concern about size voiced on the bodycam. the officer continuing to shoot multiple rounds after the dog runs into the hallway—now sits at the center of both the department’s investigation and Bass’s directive to review LAPD policy on dog encounters.
