Landry’s Greenland visit ends in public cold shoulder

Jeff Landry’s – Gov. Jeff Landry, President Donald Trump’s special envoy to Greenland, toured Nuuk this week with promises of MAGA gear and chocolate chip cookies—only to face public rejection from Greenlandic children and skepticism from Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen

Gov. Jeff Landry arrived in Greenland with a mission to win trust. In Nuuk on Sunday, he walked through the capital city and offered MAGA hats to Greenlandic children—then watched several of them shake their heads, according to a report from The New York Times.

The visit didn’t start with diplomacy, either. The same account said one resident gave Landry the finger during his stroll in Nuuk.

Landry’s attempts to connect with children kept playing out in small, blunt moments captured on video. In one exchange, the envoy asked a child if the child wanted to take a picture with him. The youngster’s response appeared to be “No.” In another clip. Landry leaned into food as a peace offering. telling a child. “If you come to Louisiana and you come to the governor’s mansion. [you can have] all the chocolate chip cookies you can eat.”.

When Landry met Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, the atmosphere carried no visible warmth. Nielsen has repeatedly pushed back against Trump’s threats to wrest ownership of Greenland from Denmark, a position Danish and Greenlandic leaders have treated as a core red line.

Nielsen said on Danish TV. “We have our red lines. ” and “no matter how many chocolate cookies we get. we are not going to change them.” After meeting with Landry. he told reporters on Monday: “We believe there is progress. and from Greenland’s side we are focused on finding a solution that is good for us all. and most importantly that threats of annexation. takeover or a purchase of Greenland and the Greenlandic people does not occur.”.

Landry, for his part, tried to recast the trip as a lesson in unity. The Times reported that his response to the rejection was, “There’s only one line and it’s red, white and blue.”

His office had also attempted to frame the visit positively. Landry told Danish TV, per Euractiv, “I just want to come here and make a lot of friends.”

The political stakes behind the trip have been high from the start. Greenland’s position exists alongside Denmark’s firm refusal to yield territory. even as Trump has insisted the United States annex or control Greenland for defense purposes. Landry. pictured at the White House in 2025. entered Greenland as President Donald Trump’s special envoy to the semiautonomous Arctic island.

The White House has described the goal differently. White House spokesperson Olivia Wales said Landry is in Greenland to strengthen ties with the territory. telling HuffPost via email. “The United States is optimistic that we are on a good trajectory to address U.S. national security interests in Greenland.” She added that “Governor Landry is doing a great job and is a strong asset to the world-class team that President Trump has put together to pursue long-term peace both at home and abroad.”.

Landry’s gumbo moment—reported by The New York Times as Landry getting gumbo on his face during an uninvited visit to Greenland—wasn’t the kind of image anyone was likely hoping to lead with. But it captured the mood of a week where small public gestures and bigger political warnings collided.

By Monday, the difference between the American pitch and the Greenlandic message seemed impossible to miss: Nielsen emphasized that threats of annexation, takeover, or purchase must not occur. Cookies and MAGA hats did not shift that boundary.

  1. I mean the kids shaking their heads says everything. Like why go offering hats and cookies if you’re also doing “threats” about taking over?? Sounds tone deaf.

  2. Wait so Denmark is like still in charge or what? Because I swear I heard Greenland was basically independent? Also the guy met the PM and they were skeptical… could just be a culture thing, not necessarily “annexation threats” right?

  3. Every time someone comes over there with MAGA stuff it’s gonna be awkward. The finger thing too?? But also like, why are they trying to buy or whatever Greenland in the first place when the whole point is polar bears and ice?? This feels like PR gone wrong.
