Lachie Neale leans toward Lions beyond 2026, family still tugging

Brisbane Lions fans got a glimpse of the emotional tug-of-war behind Lachie Neale’s next move on Tuesday, even if the midfielder himself didn’t give a clean answer.

Neale, 32, is stepping into Sunday’s clash with the Melbourne Demons at the MCG with his head still partly turned toward the calendar after 2026. It’s his first press conference since stepping down from the club’s co-captaincy after a highly publicised marriage breakdown—and the tone, understandably, carries weight. In the background, the hum of the media scrum never really stops, but at one point you could practically hear the room settle when he mentioned family.

When asked about his future, Neale said he isn’t any closer to determining where his career goes beyond 2026. Still, his preference sounds pretty clear: he’d like to remain with the Brisbane Lions—the club he’s won the past two premierships with. “We will see Piper, so I’m looking forward to seeing her,” he said, referring to his daughter, Piper, who will attend his 300th AFL game. Neale added that he didn’t realise there had only been “115 roughly” players to reach 300 games, and that he’ll “soak up” this week with his family.

The complication, of course, is Western Australia. Neale has been heavily linked with a move back to WA, after former partner Jules returned to Perth with the pair’s children. But he framed it less like a done deal and more like a puzzle with multiple missing pieces. “Everything: family, football, my own happiness – there’s a lot that will go into that,” he said, and then—almost as if he caught himself rushing the logic—he clarified he’s nowhere near making a decision yet.

The way he described it, the next step is time. “We’ll weigh all that up over the next three or four months,” Neale said. He also pointed to how well he’s felt physically, noting that he set himself up through the off-season and pre-season for a strong year, and that his body feels great. “Hopefully I’ve got a few years left yet,” he added, while also addressing the idea that 2026 could be his last season—an angle he dismissed as not motivating him.

Alongside co-captain Josh Dunkley—who will play his 200th AFL game on Sunday—Neale talked about what’s kept him engaged even when his personal life has been under pressure. Dunkley, meanwhile, said the chance to play alongside Neale was a major factor in his own move from the Western Bulldogs to Queensland in 2023. He even recalled Neale’s first day impact at Springfield, describing how it felt special to build a relationship and now become close mates.

That chemistry doesn’t sit in a vacuum, either. Neale’s future could ripple through how the Lions juggle retaining other stars, including Zac Bailey, who has attracted lucrative interest from rivals. Brisbane has also re-signed Bruce Reville through to the end of 2029 and Zane Zakostelsky for another two seasons. With money on the table across the competition—highlighted by the $2 million deal inked by Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera at St Kilda—Neale and Dunkley both argued Brisbane is positioned to keep its core together without breaking the team structure. “There is something about having that close group and selfless attitude in our group to potentially take a pay cut just for the success of the football club,” Dunkley said.

On field, the Lions are chasing a fourth straight triumph, but they’ll need to do it without Dayne Zorko, who is expected to be sidelined for three weeks with a calf strain. And while Neale wouldn’t swear to anything beyond 2026, the way he talked about “everything” that will factor into the decision—family, football, happiness—felt like the real story. The answer might come, but for now it’s still… being weighed, quietly, over the next few months.
