VANCOUVER, British Columbia — The moment Canada finally tasted history, it also fractured something else.

Midfielder Ismaël Koné’s night ended in the second half after a tackle from behind by Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo. Koné went down holding his left leg, grimacing as teammates surged toward him and players on both sides called for help from the sideline.

Madibo was sent off for the tackle. Qatar had to finish the match with nine men after the earlier loss of a player in the first half, when teammate Homam Ahmed was also sent off.

Koné was protectively surrounded by teammates while he was treated on the field. He was then stretchered off and whisked to a local hospital, where Canada coach Jesse Marsch said he was preparing for surgery while surrounded by family.

Captain Stephen Eustáquio described the instant recognition. “I saw his leg. I saw that something wasn’t right,” he said, adding that he was among the first players to reach Koné.

The injury’s details have not been disclosed. In photos after the incident, Koné’s lower left leg appeared visibly broken.

Even in the wake of a red card and a man-down situation, the match kept rolling. Less than 10 minutes after Koné’s replacement, Nathan Saliba, scored Canada’s fourth goal. Saliba then held up Koné’s jersey in an emotional tribute. underlining how quickly sports moments can turn into something darker.

Canada striker Jonathan David, who scored a hat trick, said the tackle never should have been made. “If there’s a play where you cannot win the ball, there’s no point,” he said. “It’s just to hurt people.”

After the 6-0 win, Eustáquio made plain what was left on the field. “We’re going to miss (Kone),” he said. “He has that X factor that our team really needs.”

For a team celebrating a first World Cup victory, the scoreboard will be the headline. But the image of Koné’s injured leg—and the decision that sent Madibo off—kept the focus far closer than anyone wanted.

  1. If the ref sent him off then it must’ve been a bad tackle, but I don’t get how they just kept playing right after. Like congrats on the win but cmon, that’s messed up.

  2. Wait so was he injured because they “needed to win the ball” or was this like a dirty play? I saw on TikTok someone said Qatar did it on purpose, but idk if that’s true. Either way surgery so that’s awful.

  3. This is why I hate watching football sometimes, it’s always something. They score like 6-0 then one guy’s leg is snapped and it’s just… sports. Also the article says details aren’t disclosed which makes it sound worse tbh. I’m pretty sure the red card was the main reason Canada even won, but I guess the injury stole the whole story.
