Knicks watch party returns after NYPD ban outside MSG

After the NYPD moved to stop Knicks watch parties outside Madison Square Garden during the Cavaliers series, the team is bringing the Game 1 event back. Madison Square Garden will host an outdoor and in-arena setup for the Knicks’ NBA Finals opener against the
Madison Square Garden will reopen its doors to something fans have missed: a full Knicks watch-party moment before tip-off.
On Wednesday night, the arena is scheduled to host a watch party for Game 1 of the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs. Tip-off is set for 8:30 E.T., with doors opening at 7:30 p.m. The $10 tickets—listed on Ticketmaster—sold out within an hour of the posting.
Inside the Garden, fans will be able to watch the game on Garden Vision and other screens throughout the venue. And outside, the team is also planning free watch parties at Plaza33 and at SummerStage in Central Park.
The return of the outdoor celebrations comes after a weekslong standoff that left a sharp memory for Knicks fans during the previous round. During the Cavaliers series, the New York City Police Department had to stop watch parties outside “The World’s Most Famous Arena,” saying fans became unruly.
On May 21. six people were arrested after more than 6. 000 fans celebrated following New York’s 109-93 victory over Cleveland in Game 2. In the days around those celebrations. crowds were seen jumping on top of subway entrances. climbing on police barricades. causing traffic problems. and throwing bottles—behavior officials described as more than just noisy excitement.
That’s part of why this week’s announcement lands with real contrast. The Knicks are coming off a four-game sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers, and they’ve been casting a spotlight on the city again just one round later—this time with the city’s enforcement posture no longer dominating the scene.
When the Knicks return home for Game 3 on June 8, the team said additional watch parties will take place at both Plaza33 and SummerStage in Central Park.
The sequence is plain: the team advanced through a clean four-game series while the city dealt with an outdoor crowd-control crisis tied to earlier playoff nights. and now both the arena and the wider public spaces are being drawn back into the same kind of celebration—scheduled. priced where required. and aimed at keeping fans together rather than letting them spill into transit and barricades.
