Knicks Trash Can Theft Turns Into Free DSNY Giveaway

After a viral Knicks-themed trash can theft cost Angie Baez her job at JPMorgan Chase, the NYC Department of Sanitation launched a cheeky giveaway—free Knicks bins for five winners—encouraging fans to enter instead of stealing.

New York’s Department of Sanitation isn’t letting a Knicks-themed trash can saga fade into the background. Instead, it’s turning the viral theft into something fans can actually win—free.

The DSNY announced on Friday that it would give away free Knicks-themed trash cans after the internet fixated on the moment a woman was caught taking a Knicks bin. The giveaway comes with a grin in its wording: “Stealing is a technical foul — but entering this drawing to win a full-sized litter basket is a clean win for all New Yorkers.”.

To drive the point home, the department added “No Need to KNICK a Bin” to the giveaway form. Five lucky fans will be able to pick up blue and orange baskets from lower Manhattan.

The timing is personal, not just promotional. The raffle is a direct response to the viral Angie Baez video showing her dumping trash on the street so she could have her own bin after the Knicks’ championship parade last week.

For Baez, the souvenir had consequences. The trash-can clip didn’t just spread online—it also came with a pink slip. She lost her job as a senior executive at JPMorgan Chase over the incident. At the same time. there’s relief in one detail: NYPD told us earlier this week that there was no complaint report on the incident. meaning she won’t face any legal trouble tied to it.

Now the DSNY is asking fans to keep the momentum going the right way. Entries will be accepted until July 3—so, for Knicks supporters looking for a piece of the moment without risking anything, the draw is the next stop.

  1. I don’t get it, she got fired for taking one but they want fans to enter for one? That seems backwards. Also “technical foul”??

  2. Wait the article says no complaint report so she’s fine legally, but she still lost her job. So it was the company being dramatic? Or DSNY got mad later? Kinda confusing.

  3. Honestly if it was her after the parade and everyone was acting crazy then why does she get the pink slip? Like couldn’t the bank just ignore it? Also I bet this giveaway is just a way to get people to line up and block traffic in lower Manhattan.
