Knicks Game 4 watch party plans spark bitter MSG-NYPD clash

Knicks Game – Knicks fans are stuck in uncertainty over whether there will be an outdoor watch party for Game 4 of the NBA Finals, after Mayor Eric Adams’ successor Zohran Mamdani posted that a ticketed MSG event is approved—only for Madison Square Garden Sports to respond
For a lot of Knicks fans, the night has become more about uncertainty than kickoff.
On Wednesday for Game 4 of the NBA Finals. it wasn’t the opponent that had people refreshing their phones—it was whether they would be able to gather outside Madison Square Garden in the first place. Mayor Zohran Mamdani posted on X that an MSG watch party is back. with a ticketed event planned outside the Garden. Hours later. a sharply worded message from Madison Square Garden Sports complicated everything. claiming the NYPD would enforce the same “frozen zone” restrictions used for Game 3. even though President Trump will not attend a second game in New York.
Mamdani’s post landed Tuesday night with a promise of normal street-level celebration. “NEW YORK: We’re back outside the Garden,” he wrote on X. “We have approved a ticketed MSG watch party for Game 4. More details soon.” He added a warning meant for fans: “As we prepare to watch together. let me be clear: this is a historic. joyful moment for our city. We will not allow it to be disrupted by violence. Be safe, take care, and celebrate responsibly. Knicks in 5.”.
But almost immediately after, MSG’s owners published a conflicting stance, calling Mamdani and police commissioner Jessica Tisch “party poopers.” In their statement, they said the NYPD would enforce the same “frozen zone” around the arena as they had for Game 3, even with Trump absent from Game 4.
That tension matters because the backdrop to Monday’s events is not in dispute. The Game 3 watch party at MSG was canceled at short notice on Monday night due to increased security concerns tied to President Trump’s presence. Viewing plans were redirected instead to Bryant Park, Central Park and Brooklyn Bowl, where fans still showed up in force.
In the run-up to the Spurs-Knicks showdown, a huge steel ring was erected around Madison Square Garden to protect the president. Fans reported being funnelled through lengthy lines and airport-style security before entering the area to watch.
At Bryant Park, the night took a much darker turn. Around 6. 000 fans gathered to watch the game. and after the Knicks lost Game 3 to the Spurs. the crowd spilled out onto nearby streets. The streets around 42nd St filled quickly. and there were reports of crowds jumping on taxis and cars. ripping up street lights. and throwing bottles at police officers.
The chaos was captured widely online. It ended with 21 arrests and injuries to five officers. Eight of the fans arrested faced charges including assault on a police officer, assault, criminal possession of a weapon, menacing, resisting arrest, and obstructing governmental administration.
The steel ring also left collateral damage beyond the police lines. Local businesses near MSG, which depend heavily on concert- and sports-goers coming before and after events, reportedly suffered when the measures locked down foot traffic.
Mamdani’s Game 4 message was framed as a recovery from those disruptions. He said the administration would not let celebration turn into violence, but he also pointed to what he called a broader problem with the restrictions.
After MSG’s “party poopers” comment. Mamdani pushed back on the logic of the “frozen zone.” He said. “We now know these restrictions were never about the President – it was just a convenient excuse to restrict how and when Knicks fans celebrate.” He added that a complete closing of areas around MSG would affect “not only the celebration but also all the small businesses that rely on Garden fans for their livelihood. ” arguing that the actions of the mayor and the police commissioner—“supposedly in support of the Knicks and their fans”—were difficult to understand. He urged officials to lift the restrictions and embrace what he called “the love of the team.”.
MSG’s statement. in turn. insisted the celebrations had already proven they were capable of turning into something they viewed as unmanageable. It quoted the recent history of Knicks wins celebrated outside MSG by “thousands and thousands. ” then criticized officials for not wanting the gatherings to happen.
With Trump absent from Game 4, the disagreement now centers on enforcement details that fans ultimately feel in the street. MSG said the NYPD would impose the same “frozen zone” restrictions that were previously described as necessary to curb threats tied to the president’s attendance. Mamdani. meanwhile. told New Yorkers that the city is “back outside the Garden. ” describing his approved ticketed watch party as a “historic. joyful moment.”.
The Daily Mail reached out to the Mayor’s Office for clarification on the situation.
Until officials and venues align on what fans will actually be able to do outside MSG on Wednesday, the only certainty for Knicks supporters is the question hovering over Midtown: will it be a night to celebrate together—or another night where the rules decide for them, long before the game begins?

Frozen zone again?? So basically nobody’s allowed to have fun.
I swear MSG always changes the rules last minute. First they say it’s back outside then police stuff comes in and ruins it.
Why are they even talking about Trump like he’s the problem lol. If he’s not there, why would the “frozen zone” still matter? Sounds like MSG just wants ticket money and excuses.
This is why I don’t trust anything on X. They posted “we’re back outside” and then MSG comes out like party poopers… ok but also NYPD decides? I’m confused, like are they telling people to stand in a circle and freeze or what. Also “Knicks in 5” like cmon, let’s be real, they’re fighting over where fans can stand.
