Knicks’ first-ever parade set as Mamdani names date

Knicks first-ever – Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced New York will host the Knicks’ first-ever championship parade on Thursday after the team won their third NBA title with a 94-90 Game 5 win over the Spurs in the 2026 Finals.

The moment the final possession ended in San Antonio, it didn’t just complete a comeback—it reopened a promise New York fans have been chasing for decades.

The Knicks crawled back from 16 points down to beat the Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Saturday. The victory secured the team’s third ever NBA title and their first since 1973. For all the joy in the arena. what landed in the city faster than celebration was the announcement that New York will finally honor the Knicks with a championship parade—something the franchise has never had in its 80-year history.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani revealed the celebration date as Thursday. “For more than 50 years, New Yorkers have waited for this moment,” Mamdani said in a statement. “Through near misses. heartbreak and a hope that every year could be our year. this city never stopped believing in the Knicks. And this team fulfilled that hope with grit, resilience and heart — just like the five boroughs itself.”.

He added: “New Yorkers have cheered for our team from packed living rooms in the Bronx to watch parties in Brooklyn, from bars in Queens to Staten Island to Manhattan, and Madison Square Garden itself. Now it’s time for our city to celebrate together.”

Mamdani ended his statement with the Knicks rallying cry: “Bing bong.”

The parade details are expected to be revealed Sunday. If it follows the traditional “Canyon of Heroes” route, the festivities would likely run along Broadway between Chambers and Rector streets.

There’s extra weight behind the timing. Under late coach Red Holzman, the Knicks won two championships, but they were never granted a ticket-tape parade. In 1970, financial troubles and other logistical issues meant the players were pushed into a private celebration at Gracie Mansion. The Super Bowl III-champion Jets also didn’t receive a parade in early 1970.

New York’s recent parade history helps explain what fans were denied. Months earlier, the New York Mets were celebrated in the “Canyon of Heroes” after winning their first World Series. And when New York beat the Los Angeles Lakers again in the 1973 NBA Finals. the Knicks were once more toasted at City Hall rather than marched in a full city parade.

So while Saturday’s win settled the Finals, Thursday’s parade looks set to settle something longer: the final piece of a Knicks celebration New York has waited to see since 1973—and, in a franchise sense, for the first time ever.

  1. I can’t believe it took them until 2026 for a Knicks parade. Like the Mets got one forever ago and the Knicks just… never? Anyway Thursday better have traffic be insane.

  2. Wait so they won 3rd title and this is their first ever parade… isn’t that because of the Spurs? or like some NBA rule? I’m confused. Also “Canyon of Heroes” on Broadway sounds cool but I’m pretty sure it was already like that for other teams too.

  3. Thursday?? That’s actually kinda perfect because everyone’s already hyped up from Saturday. I remember reading something about Gracie Mansion back in the day, so I guess they’re finally doing the real parade now. If they run it from Chambers to Rector I’m avoiding that area, because I swear New York never knows how to plan crowds.
