New York Knicks fans filled the streets to celebrate a championship the franchise hadn’t seen since 1973. In Canoga Park, the celebration turned into grief.

Late on June 13. Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to what a radio call described as a “screaming woman” in an apartment unit around 8:55 p.m. according to an LAPD news release. The call brought officers of the LAPD’s Topanga Patrol Division to a complex in Canoga Park. where they were directed to the specific unit where the noise was coming from.

The woman, identified as Marie Marsielle, had her dog, Jameson, by her side as she spoke with the officers. The LAPD said Marsielle was heard screaming and yelling in celebration of the Knicks’ 2026 NBA championship. the team’s first since 1973. LAPD also said Jameson was sporting Knicks apparel that night and was allegedly barking at police. Officers requested the pet be secured.

Marsielle, the LAPD said, momentarily closed her door. When she re-opened it. Jameson exited the apartment and allegedly charged at one of the officers. who then fired at the dog in an “Officer-Involved shooting. ” authorities said. LAPD said no community members or officers were injured. Jameson was pronounced dead.

In a video taken by neighbors and posted to TikTok. Marsielle was shown on the ground holding her dog while sobbing and weeping. “Oh my God. My Jameson,” she cried out in grief, as she laid out on the concrete with her deceased pet. “Oh no!. No!. No!. No!” Over and over, she repeated, “I can’t, I can’t.”.

She also screamed about the timing. “The Knicks just won a championship, we were just so happy. We were just celebrating the Knicks,” she said. “We were just celebrating the Knicks. …This is absolutely crazy, we didn’t do anything.”

Other neighbors could be seen and heard in the clip screaming at police officers as helicopters began to circle the apartment complex. One neighbor said. “He was such a good dog.” Another asked. “You guys killed a dog when there’s (expletive) drug dealers and (expletive) outside. Why don’t you shoot those (expletive).” A different resident said, “Seriously?. Seriously, for a dog?. Are you serious?”.

After the shooting, the Los Angeles Department of Animal Services was notified, responded to the scene, and took custody of Jameson’s body. Force Investigation Division (FID) investigators also responded to investigate the incident. The LAPD said Marsielle cooperated with the investigation.

The LAPD said in a statement that the information provided was based on a preliminary and ongoing investigation. which continues to evolve as investigators interview witnesses. review physical and electronic records. and analyze forensic evidence. The department said its understanding of the facts and circumstances may change as additional evidence is collected and analyzed.

  2. Charging an officer?? Like how fast was the dog even going if it was inside an apartment. Sounds like bad decisions all around. Also the headline says “Canoga Park ends in dog death” like the Knicks caused it? Come on man.

  3. This is heartbreaking. I can’t even imagine opening your door and your dog just runs out like “Knicks time” and then boom. They said she was yelling celebrating and the radio call was a “screaming woman” so maybe they already had the wrong vibe and reacted way too quick. I feel so bad for her, she was literally sobbing on the ground with him. Poor Jameson didn’t deserve that.
