The Knicks finally did it—first trip to the NBA Finals since 1999—and now a potential presidential cameo is threatening to swallow the excitement whole.

When the team’s owner. James Dolan. invited President Donald Trump to attend Game 3 of the series. scheduled for Monday. June 8. Knicks fans reacted fast. The trouble isn’t just that Trump would be in the building. It’s what comes with him—security friction inside Madison Square Garden and a sense. for many supporters. that the spotlight will shift away from the team.

New York canceled the watch party outside Madison Square Garden for security reasons. The invitation has also produced a “TSA-like” warning for fans coming to the game. The Garden advised supporters to arrive two hours early and told them they cannot bring bags.

On top of that. the watch party outside the arena—where fans typically gather to watch the TV broadcast on a big screen—was canceled for the same reason. For longtime Knicks fans who were expecting to turn the city into a celebration. the change has felt less like preparation and more like a curb on the moment.

That frustration spilled into conversation as well. A segment aired Sunday, June 7, asking Knicks fans how they feel about Trump coming to Game 3. Several did not soften their views.

One fan, wearing an orange Knicks shirt and hat, said, “He could say he’s a native New Yorker, but he doesn’t live here, and he’s kind of pooped on us for a while. I think this is our time, and he’s distracting from our time.”

Another said, “We don’t need that negativity. We need nothing but positive vibes.”

Even Stephen A. Smith—known as one of the most outspoken Knicks voices in sports media—made the message unmistakable on his Sirius XM show. “He’s coming to Game 3 of the finals, and I don’t want him there,” Smith said.

He added: “It has nothing to do with politics, policy or anything like that. It has everything to do with him disrupting and contributing at the same time to the chaos that’s going to be existing at Madison Square Garden. If it were [former President] Barack Obama coming to the Garden, I would say, ‘Stay home. Stay at the White House.’”.

Trump, 79, has attended Knicks games before, including a well-known appearance at the Garden during the Knicks’ 1994 NBA Finals run. But as president, he has shown little interest in the NBA, a disinterest that has followed him in the league. During Trump’s first term. the NBA’s Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers declined the customary visit to the White House after winning their titles.

Trump has also been sharply critical of the NBA since entering politics. During the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020, some players boycotted games, and Trump complained that “the NBA in particular is gonna destroy basketball.”

As Game 3 approaches. one practical question remains: it’s unclear whether Trump would be courtside or elsewhere in the Garden if he goes through with attending. And if he appears on the jumbotron, the reaction could be swift. With Trump’s approval rating in the state of New York at -35. fans are bracing for a chorus of boos.

For Knicks supporters, the stakes are simple—even if the details are not. They want Game 3 to feel like their time. Right now, security instructions, canceled watch parties, and a presidential invitation are turning that celebration into something harder to control.

  1. I get security but canceling the watch party is kinda lame. Like people were finally excited after 1999 and now it’s just gonna be a whole checkpoint thing.

  2. Wait so they’re saying it’s “TSA-like” which means no bags? That’s crazy. Also didn’t NYC cancel it because of riots or something? I saw a clip earlier and I’m not even sure what the real reason is.

  3. This is what happens when politics shows up to sports. Next thing you know James Dolan is like forcing everyone to clap when Trump walks in, and the refs are gonna be distracted or whatever. Knicks finally in the Finals and they’re acting like it’s some terrorist drill with everyone arriving two hours early.
