Madison Square Garden will look and feel different on Monday night.
Ahead of Game 3 of the NBA Finals—tipoff at 8:30 p.m. ET on Monday. June 8—the New York Knicks are preparing for President Donald Trump to attend and are stepping up security in a way many fans may recognize from airports. The team announced Saturday. June 6 that it would implement “TSA-style screening procedures” for entry into the arena. working with United States Secret Service officials.
The change lands at a high-pressure moment for the organization. The Knicks are in the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999, and New York has won 13 straight playoff games. On the court. their momentum is hard to miss: the team beat the San Antonio Spurs twice in Texas and took a 2-0 lead in the series going into Game 3.
In a statement. the Knicks said the measures are designed to help ensure “a safe and enjoyable experience for all ticket holders by sharing important security procedures that will be in place.” The team also spelled out the expectations for fans arriving with items: a strict no-bag policy will be in effect. and fans were urged to limit personal belongings to an absolute minimum.
With screening tightened, the Knicks also urged fans to plan ahead. They encouraged supporters to arrive at least two hours before the 8:30 p.m. ET tipoff.
The arena’s celebrity-heavy atmosphere has been part of the season’s story. Spike Lee. Timothée Chalamet. and Ben Stiller have all been at Madison Square Garden cheering for the Knicks this year. Now. with the added scrutiny that comes with a presidential visit. the familiar buzz is set to mix with a different kind of arrival-time tension—one that starts long before the first whistle.
The Knicks’ security upgrade shows how quickly big-league sports can adjust when major political attention is in the building. Fans will move through stricter screening. with less space for personal items. as the team pushes for another critical result in a finals that already has the series shaped toward a seven-game battle between the Knicks and Spurs.

So they’re basically turning MSG into an airport for a basketball game? That’s kinda wild.
I get it’s Trump, but the no-bag thing is gonna be a nightmare for normal people. Like how am I supposed to bring water or my phone charger? They should’ve figured this out sooner.
TSA-style screening… so does that mean they’re confiscating iPhones too or what? Also Secret Service is already there anyway, seems like overkill. Knicks fans already paid enough, now they gotta show up 2 hours early because reasons.
This is what happens when politics ruins sports. I’m pretty sure they only do the extra checks because Trump’s gonna be there, but then they act like it’s for ‘everyone’s safety’ like it’s the same everywhere. If they don’t want bags, then just say no bags, don’t do the whole TSA thing. Also didn’t they already win 13 straight playoff games?? Like surely nothing can go wrong.
