Klopp agent slams Madrid push as Haaland promise sparks chaos

When Real Madrid’s presidential campaign starts circling Jurgen Klopp’s name, his camp is wasting no time in cutting it off.

Marc Kosike, Klopp’s agent, dismissed the idea that the German could be appointed at the Bernabeu if Enrique Riquelme wins the election. Kosike’s message was blunt: “It’s annoying.” He added that Jurgen Klopp is “happy in his role at Red Bull” and has “no ambitions to work as a coach at a club.”

Klopp himself stepped down as Liverpool manager in 2024 after a hugely successful tenure at Anfield. He has since repeatedly spoken about having no desire to return to management. Riquelme, 37, has tried to ignore that trail. He said on Friday that Klopp has publicly stated he has no intention of returning to the dugout “in the short term” and has “turned down numerous offers” — and that. for Real Madrid. those circumstances could be different.

The challenger framed the pitch around the club’s unique identity. Riquelme argued there are “great clubs. ” but “there is only one Real Madrid. ” describing the institution as capable of uniting tradition and future. values and ambition. passion and excellence. He added that if members grant him their trust this Sunday. then on Monday Raúl would contact Klopp personally to convey “our sporting project” and the wish for him to “be the one to lead. from the bench. a new era for Real Madrid.”.

Klopp’s link has been only one part of a campaign that has already brought irritation from other quarters. Riquelme has gone further than promises and into provocations. including claims made during the build-up that he would pursue Erling Haaland if elected. He even held up a Madrid shirt with Haaland’s name on the back during a television campaign appearance.

That claim has hit a nerve with Manchester City. A Man City spokesperson said the stories about Haaland’s future circulating from Spain are “untrue.” The spokesperson added: “There is no chance of this happening and there is no contractual clause to enable it.” Man City said it is “considering legal action for the use of our player image in this context.”.

Riquelme’s plans have not stopped at Haaland. He also promised to sign Rodri, the City midfielder, and City’s response has only underlined how quickly election rhetoric can become a legal issue when it touches players.

The election itself runs against a heavy favorite. Enrique Riquelme is set to face incumbent president Florentino Pérez. 79. who has been Real Madrid president twice already — from 2000 to 2006 and again from 2009 to the present. Real’s members pay £130-a-year and there are 10,000 of them, with votes cast on Sunday.

Pérez has already made it clear that he expects to stay in charge. He confirmed that Jose Mourinho will be the new manager if he is re-elected. Mourinho is expected to take charge for the second time at the Bernabeu. and his new contract is believed to run until the summer of 2028 with an option to extend by a further year.

Mourinho, 63, steps into a club that Perez will be asking members to back during a difficult season. It has been clouded by in-fighting between players, an early Champions League exit, and Barcelona running away with the LaLiga title.

Pérez’s campaign messaging has also leaned into the promise of big names. He has said there will be a huge new Galactico signing worth £129million. with Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise reported to be the primary target. Riquelme has also floated additions, naming Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries as new additions.

For members voting on Sunday, the contrast is sharpened by what each side is willing to say publicly. Kosike’s shutdown of the Klopp idea lands with particular weight because it comes directly as Riquelme continues to push a more dramatic vision — even when that vision has already drawn pushback from one of Europe’s most powerful clubs.

On the same stage where Riquelme tries to sell a “new era” around Klopp, the reality from within Klopp’s camp is simpler: the German will not be moving to Real Madrid as a coach — and the agent’s irritation suggests the conversation will not be welcomed in future, either.
