Kieran McKenna steps down from Ipswich after Fulham talk

Kieran McKenna is stepping down as Ipswich manager to take a break from football. Sky Sports News has been told he will not be taking over as Fulham boss, nor any other club in the near future. Ipswich are protected financially should he decide to take up a new role in the next 12 months. They would be due compensation in line with the remaining time left in his contract up until the one-year mark. The current figure stands at around £7m. Transfer Centre LIVE!

contentment that I have decided to step down from the honour of managing this historic football club,” McKenna said. “When you have the connection that we have built at this club, there is never a good time to say goodbye. “However, having achieved a second promotion to the Premier League last season, with another memorable final day in our stadium, and after reflection over the last couple of weeks, I feel this is the right time for me to step aside. “I do so with
great pride at the incredible progress we have made and with huge hope and optimism for the future of the club.”
Kieran McKenna, Ipswich Town, Portman Road, stepping down, Fulham interest, Premier League promotion, compensation £7m
So he’s stepping down… for like, a vacation? Wild.
I swear I saw Fulham links like two weeks ago though. Now it’s “no other club in the near future” like that even matters. If Ipswich is paying 7 million compensation, wouldn’t that mean someone DIDN’T want him gone?
Replying to the Fulham part—doesn’t this mean Fulham already hired someone? Or is it just rumors getting shut down. Also why would he get protected financially, like the club owns his legs or something. £7m sounds insane for a coach to take a break.
Good for him I guess but the compensation part is what gets me. Like if he “takes a break from football” then how do they even decide if he’s taking another job in the next 12 months? And the article said third promotion in four years—so it’s not like they didn’t get results. Feels like Fulham stuff caused it, even if they’re saying he won’t take over. Soccer drama is always messy.
