CARSON CITY, Nev. — The call started with a custody dispute, then turned into something far more urgent as hours passed without the child or the man she was last reported with.
Carson City Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 2000 block of Loan Mountain Street around 3:30 p.m. on May 31 for a report of a child custody dispute. When deputies met with a woman who said she had allowed Christopher Meithof to stay with her overnight so he could visit her 5-year-old child. the story briefly sounded contained—until Sunday morning.
The woman told deputies that when she woke up, she discovered Meithof and the child were not at home. After several hours of trying to contact and locate Meithof and the child, she contacted the sheriff’s office.
Investigators then shifted from searching locally to tracking Meithof’s movement. Deputies reviewed local traffic and Flock camera information and located Meithof’s red Jeep Grand Cherokee driving southbound on Highway 395. passing old Clear Creek Road at 4:36 a.m. Deputies attempted to contact Meithof, but his phone went directly to voicemail.
The investigation expanded as multiple agencies moved in. The U.S. Marshal’s Pacific Southwest Fugitive Task Force. Homeland Security Investigations’ Los Angeles Division. and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Bureau conducted a traffic stop in Palmdale. California. around 2:15 p.m. on June 1. During that stop, investigators recovered the missing child.
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office said the child was safe and unharmed. Meithof was not with the child at the time of the recovery. but authorities said he was located and arrested at a residence near the traffic stop. He was arrested without incident and is being held at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Palmdale station pending extradition to Nevada.
After the recovery, the child was placed in the care of Palmdale Child Protective Services to help facilitate the child’s return to her mother.

I’m confused on the timeline. It says found after an AMBER alert but also hours passed? Like how did he get that far from Carson City to CA and nobody saw.
That suspect’s name sounds familiar… like I’ve heard it in a different story or maybe it was some other Meithof thing. Also why was the woman letting him stay over if it was a custody dispute, that’s kinda wild.
Thank God the kid is safe but seriously Flock cameras and Highway 395 tracked him? Makes you wonder if they were just looking for the Jeep the whole time. Also arrested pending extradition like that’s some long process, hope she’s with her mom asap.
