Only 5 Sith Are More Powerful Than Darth Maul

Only 5 – Darth Maul is one of Star Wars’ most feared Sith Lords, but the saga holds an even darker ladder—five names tied to Force mastery, political reach, and legendary feats. From Darth Revan’s split allegiance to Darth Sidious’ galaxy-spanning scheming, these Sith
The first time Darth Maul cuts into the screen in Star Wars: Episode I—The Phantom Menace, you don’t just see a Sith—you feel the danger in his stillness.
Ray Park plays him as an apprentice of Darth Sidious (Ian McDiarmid). His mission is direct and brutal: capture Queen Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman). But the outcome is just as sharp as the threat—he’s killed by Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor). Even so, the mythology doesn’t stop at that moment.
In the Star Wars franchise. Sith Lords carry the title “Darth. ” which roughly translates to “Dark Lord.” The moniker signals a complete transformation: an elimination of identity to fully commit to the dark side. Maul fits that image—but there are other Sith Lords in the greater Star Wars universe. both canon and legacy. who prove more powerful.
Darth Revan
Darth Revan’s story stretches back roughly 4,000 years before the Skywalker Saga, and it’s primarily told through video games. In Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Revan is one of the few who can master both the light and the dark sides of the Force.
He’s known for his distinctive mask. and he begins as a gifted Jedi who defied the Jedi Council to lead Republic forces against a Mandalorian invasion. While pursuing the Mandalorians. Revan discovers a hidden Sith Empire. falls to the dark side. and later earns redemption when his apprentice. Malak. betrays him to the Jedi Council. After that betrayal, he’s retrained as a Jedi.
Revan’s arsenal is described as versatile and nearly unmatched in capability. He draws on both sides—using positive emotions as effectively as his enemies and then using the reverse. He’s also portrayed as a strategically and tactically brilliant duelist in lightsaber combat. While his story mostly remains in Legends continuity. his presence and legacy are cemented in Star Wars canon by name and existence.
If a live-action iteration were to come to fruition, fans still beg for Keanu Reeves to take the part.
Darth Tyranus (Count Dooku)
Many may know him as Darth Tyranus, but more commonly his name is Count Dooku. Played by the legendary Sir Christopher Lee, Dooku is a powerful Sith Lord and the primary political antagonist of Star Wars: Episode II—Attack of the Clones.
He begins as a revered Jedi Master and Padawan of Yoda (Frank Oz). From there, disillusionment with the corrupt Galactic Senate drives him to leave the Jedi Order. He falls to the dark side and ultimately becomes an apprentice to Darth Sidious, earning his moniker of Darth Tyranus.
Dooku recruits bounty hunter Jango Fett (Temuera Morrison) to assassinate Senator Padmé Amidala. But his plans unravel. When they’re foiled, Dooku captures Obi-Wan Kenobi and cuts off Anakin Skywalker’s (Hayden Christensen) arm.
He’s also responsible for delivering the plans for the Death Star to Darth Sidious.
In the end, though, Sidious betrays his apprentice—because he wanted Anakin to replace him. Even if Dooku’s most detailed appearances are in the prequel series, he’s also present in animated series including The Clone Wars and Tales of the Jedi, along with multiple novels.
What makes Tyranus stand out is tied to lineage and control. He trained under Yoda and Sidious, making him a formidable Force user. Though age is a major factor in his downfall. he’s regarded as one of the greatest duelists in the galaxy. The difference from many of his contemporaries is that he isn’t consumed by mindless rage—he’s cold and calculating. His political prowess is a further layer, strengthening him beyond most.
Darth Plagueis
Darth Plagueis is introduced as a dark side legend. with his first mention coming in Revenge of the Sith when then-Chancellor Palpatine recites “the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise.” In that story. Palpatine says Plagueis was so powerful—having mastered the dark side to the extent that he could cheat death and create life. The twist is devastating: Plagueis couldn’t prevent his own death.
In Rae Carson’s novelization of Star Wars: Episode IX—The Rise of Skywalker, it’s implied that Palpatine used Plagueis’ secret to immortality to resurrect himself after his death in Star Wars: Episode VI—Return of the Jedi.
Then, in The Acolyte, Plagueis watches his apprentice, Qimir (Manny Jacinto), leaving with former Jedi Osha (Amandla Stenberg) on a quest to find her twin, Mae, and her former master, Sol (Lee Jung-jae).
Though Plagueis is mostly a legend by name, his appearance in The Acolyte arrives as a frail, withered being with glowing eyes—one that familiar diehard Star Wars fans would recognize from his Legends run, including a novel written by James Luceno.
Before embracing his Sith life. Plagueis lived as Hego Damask II. an immensely wealthy and influential Muum financier who manipulated the Galactic Republic’s fall through economics. Expanded Universe lore states his experiments with midi-chlorian manipulation led to Anakin’s immaculate conception as the “Chosen One.”.
He’s also known for relativistic speed, called “red lightning.” Eventually, it’s revealed he was betrayed by Sidious himself, dying in infamy. His powers remain legendary even after that end.
Darth Vader
Darth Vader is the kind of villain whose impact still echoes through pop culture. Some fans may not have been pleased by his portrayal in the prequel trilogy, but his legacy is undeniable.
His first appearance in his iconic form comes in the original film, Star Wars: Episode IV—A New Hope. As the primary antagonist of the series. his highlight reel includes the reveal that he was Luke Skywalker’s (Mark Hamill) father. followed by his eventual redemption. Origin stories were tracked in the prequel trilogy, with Hayden Christensen taking on his original form, Anakin Skywalker.
Vader’s arc is shaped by tragedy: he’s once a gifted Jedi whose immense power is tied to a prophecy that he would bring balance to the Force. After being seduced by Palpatine to save his wife from dying, he turns to the dark side and earns his infamous moniker.
The franchise frames Vader as present across film, television, video games, comics, and more—forming one of the most fully realized villain narratives in the galaxy. He’s described as having mastered all even primary lightsaber combat forms, giving him the ability to overwhelm any opponent.
His telekinesis is presented as another layer of dominance. allowing him to crush internal organs. lift massive starships. and dismantle enemies from afar. Once in his armor, Vader is even more indestructible. Add his ability to play on the psychological fears of his opposition. and the story leaves little room for stopping him.
In the end, his demise is described as roughly his own doing. The “Chosen One” label and his universe-altering connection to the Force make him a formidable Sith Lord.
Darth Sidious
If all roads lead to a single figure in Star Wars, it’s Darth Sidious. He first appears as Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars: Episode V—The Empire Strikes Back.
Sidious is one of the few characters whose impact spans not just all three trilogies, but also television, books, video games, novels, comics, and more. In the story as it’s framed here, Darth Sidious influences the entirety of the Skywalker Saga’s events.
His premise begins with masterminding the fall of the Galactic Empire and the Jedi Order from within. He uses a public persona—serving as Senator of Naboo. Supreme Chancellor of the Republic. and eventually the tyrannical Emperor of the Galactic Empire. His Sith identity is kept secret as he manipulates the Clone Wars via both sides.
By the sequel trilogy, Sidious has cheated death. His next mark is Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), who becomes the prime antagonist of the story. The legacy carries into that era as well: Rey (Daisy Ridley) is revealed to be Palpatine’s granddaughter.
After nine main films, Sidious dies at the hands of a redeemed Kylo Ren, now Ben Solo, and Rey—because their dyad becomes too powerful.
Underneath the surface, Sidious is portrayed as a force master and political strategist hiding in the shadows while presenting a facade. He decimates enemy fleets, defeats multiple Jedi Masters and Sith Lords, and even manipulates violent hyperspace wormholes in the expanded lore.
His connection to the dark side is described as absolute: his consciousness can survive physical death and transfer into cloned bodies. With deep Sith sorcery, intelligence, and strategic brilliance, his plans set in motion the entire saga. Darth Vader may be the most forward-facing villain, but the story leaves no doubt that Darth Sidious is the mastermind.
The Sith ladder doesn’t end with Maul’s ferocity. The greater threat keeps escalating—through control of the Force, through control of people, and through control of the story itself.

Wait so is this saying Maul isn’t even top 5? That’s wild.
I didn’t read it all but Maul literally survived getting chopped in half, so how are there only “5” more powerful?? Sounds like clickbait.
replying to Mark Johnson: I mean Maul got beat by Obi-Wan in Episode I tho, so maybe they’re counting who had more “scheming” power or something. But Sith power is like… totally subjective. Also Revan? I’m confused if that’s canon now.
Darth this, Darth that. Everyone acting like Padme was the real prize or something. I swear they made Maul cooler in later stuff and this article’s stuck on the first movie vibe. If Sidious is on the list then yeah I get it, but the whole “Force mastery, political reach” thing is kinda random. Like who cares, Maul was scary on screen.
