Floods and landslides kill at least 18 in Kenya

Heavy rains have triggered deadly flooding and landslides across several Kenyan counties, killing at least 18 people and disrupting daily life.

Devastating rain-driven disasters are striking Kenya, with floods and landslides reported across multiple counties.

Misryoum reports that police said at least 18 people have died after heavy rains led to landslides in Tharaka Nithi, Elgeyo-Marakwet and Kiambu in the central and eastern parts of the country.

The police urged residents to remain cautious as mudslides and flood impacts affect families and damage homes and local infrastructure. Reports also indicate it was still unclear how many people have been displaced.

Meanwhile in Nairobi, streets flooded, with cars and pedestrians moving through water as some areas struggled under overflowing conditions.

Insight: When rainfall turns into fast-moving floods and slides, the harm goes beyond individual injuries. Disrupted roads, damaged services and damaged homes can slow rescue efforts and deepen the fallout for communities.

In several Nairobi neighbourhoods, traders in Makongeni and Ruai held protests on Sunday, pointing to poor road conditions during the rains and saying it has hurt their businesses.

Earlier warnings from weather authorities highlighted health risks linked to contaminated water and the spread of waterborne diseases, alongside concerns for crops and farmland.

This follows another deadly episode in Kenya in recent months, when parts of Nairobi saw flooding in March that killed at least 37 people.

Insight: The repeated pattern of extreme rainfall can quickly overwhelm local drainage, settlements and emergency response capacity, making preparedness and safer land use more urgent each time.

Kenya is currently in its seasonal March to May rains, which typically peak in the first half of May, and Misryoum notes long-standing concerns that changing climate conditions are intensifying weather extremes across the region.
