Kenny Loggins, Kevin Bacon, John Lithgow Reunite

Kenny Loggins returned to “The Tonight Show” for a surprise “Classroom Instruments” performance with Kevin Bacon and John Lithgow, turning toy-instrument mayhem into a full-on “Footloose” reunion—complete with Reverend Shaw Moore objections.

On Wednesday evening, “The Tonight Show” brought its classic “Classroom Instruments” segment back—then flipped the script by tapping Kenny Loggins, Kevin Bacon, and John Lithgow.

The famed singer-songwriter and the actors, who co-starred in the 1984 musical dance drama “Footloose,” joined Jimmy Fallon and The Roots for a jam session built around toy instruments, making the stage feel less like a talk show set and more like a playful dance floor.

Lithgow, who played the strict, music-hating Reverend Shaw Moore in “Footloose,” leaned into the bit mid-performance. “Now wait a minute. Everybody listen to me. I object to this kind of music. It’s illegal in this building.”

Bacon didn’t miss a beat—jumping in with the kind of energy his character would recognize. “Jump back! I thought this was supposed to be a party – let’s dance!”

Loggins’ appearance landed just one day before he was set to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He’ll enter alongside Taylor Swift, Alanis Morissette, KISS’ Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, Christopher “Tricky” Stewart, Walter Afanasieff, Terry Britten and Graham Lyle.

The Wednesday “Classroom Instruments” segment also marked Loggins’ first time doing the bit on “The Tonight Show.” It wasn’t the first celeb-studded version of the show. though—over the years. participants have included Swift. Jennifer Hudson. James Corden. Adele. Justin Timberlake. Lin-Manuel Miranda. Madonna. Gwen Stefani and Metallica. among others.

Before Loggins took the toy-instrument stage with Fallon and The Roots, the last “Classroom Instruments” segment happened in April, when Niall Horan had Fallon and The Roots join him for a fun take on his single, “Save My Life.”

“The Tonight Show” Starring Jimmy Fallon airs week nights at 11:35 p.m. ET on NBC.

  1. This is kinda wholesome but also why does Lithgow yelling “illegal in this building” sound like my HOA meetings 😂. Anyway I love Footloose so I’m watching.

  2. I thought the Songwriters Hall of Fame is like for songwriting only, not actors? Like Kevin Bacon better not be there cuz of acting… but maybe he wrote Footloose songs? Not sure, article didn’t really explain that part.

  3. “Classroom Instruments” is still the most random segment idea ever, like it’s always some celeb doing weird toy stuff. I’m assuming Loggins did it to promote the Songwriters Hall of Fame induction (since it says day before) but also maybe the Roots picked the songs? Either way, Reverend Shaw Moore objecting to music is hilarious and now I want to rewatch Footloose, even though I haven’t in years.
