The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts’ future could be decided Tuesday as the performing arts center confronts a growing financial crisis.
The center’s board is set to meet today, Sept. 15, as it considers the institution’s financial situation, with a report warning that the Kennedy Center could soon face difficulty covering basic expenses, including payroll and maintenance.
The uncertainty comes during a busy stretch on the Kennedy Center’s calendar.
While many performers have canceled their appearances after President Donald Trump’s takeover, there remain free events scheduled throughout September and into the fall.
Whether those events go forward could depend on what the board decides Tuesday and how any potential closure is implemented.
For now, there has been no announcement canceling upcoming performances. Patrons should check their event listings and the Kennedy Center’s website for the latest information as the situation develops.
What events are still scheduled at the Kennedy Center?
All of the Kennedy Center events for the remainder of September are free to attend.

- Sept. 24 – Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra
- Sept. 25 – Water Seed
- Sept. 26 – Formosan Groove
The Kennedy Center will also host free outdoor film screenings on Sept. 19 (“Step Up”), Sept. 25 (“9 to 5”) and Sept. 26 (“Wicked: For Good”).
It does not have any ticketed events on its calendar. The National Symphony Orchestra — which historically played at the Kennedy Center — will perform at six venues throughout the DMV beginning later this month.
