Kelsey Grammer didn’t take long to shut down the buzz.

After headlines sparked earlier this week about him possibly running for public office, the “Frasier” actor set the record straight, making it clear he isn’t “hatching” a move “as we speak.”

Grammer was in Washington, D.C. on Thursday to promote his new movie. “Young Washington. ” and to meet with President Donald Trump—appearances that helped fuel the speculation. Speaking first about his political aspirations. he framed the idea in personal terms. saying it might “tick that box” for service he feels he missed in the military. “It would possibly tick that box for me. in terms of the service I feel I should have given to my fellow man — to my fellow countrymen — that I missed in the military. ” Grammer said to Us Weekly. “Maybe that would be the way to do it. I have wrestled with it.”.

He also suggested he could wait before making any kind of bid. noting he might hold off until his youngest children are older. Still, the 71-year-old actor insisted he isn’t worried that his age would be a problem. “I’m vital and prepared to stay that way for quite a while,” he said. “And yes, it’s likely I will at least throw my hat in the ring in some way.”.

But after those remarks made headlines, Grammer moved to tamp down the momentum. Speaking with TMZ shortly afterward, he walked back the timeline and urgency of the idea. “I have thought about it in the past,” he said. “It’s not something I’m hatching as we speak. No.”

Even as he denied being in the middle of a concrete push. Grammer didn’t close the door on the bigger feeling behind the speculation. He admitted he still feels he’s meant to “serve my country in some way. ” adding. “So. who knows.” When pressed again for any specific plans. he said he had “nothing” to share “yet.”.

The question now isn’t whether Grammer thinks about public service—it’s how quickly that reflection turns into anything voters can track.
