He stepped into a stadium crowd in Los Angeles, watched the match unfold, and then—somehow—turned the World Cup into a punchline.

During a 2026 FIFA World Cup match between Belgium and Iran. Keegan-Michael Key revived his “Substitute Teacher” character from “Key & Peele. ” swapping a classroom full of students for some of soccer’s biggest names. The bit landed as part of Key’s involvement in Casamigos’ World Cup campaign with Gabrielle Union. and within hours it was racing across feeds.

The sketch recreates the same “Key & Peele” format that made the original 2012 “Key & Peele” segment memorable. “My name is Mr. Garvey. I’m your substitute teacher today. ” Key says as he attempts to take attendance—only this time he calls roll using the names of international soccer players instead of students.

Among the intentionally butchered pronunciation list are France’s Aurélien Tchouaméni, Kylian Mbappé and Désiré Doué; Brazil’s Vinícius Júnior; Spain’s Lamine Yamal; Norway’s Erling Haaland; and England’s Jude Bellingham and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Wan-Bissaka gets one of the sketch’s biggest callbacks when Key revives his famous “A-A-Ron” pronunciation from the original video. For longtime fans, it’s the detail they recognized immediately. For newer viewers, it’s the kind of recurring gag that makes the whole clip feel like a reunion.

The video’s momentum has been swift. The TikTok clip has earned more than 1 million likes. with viewers praising the crossover between soccer and one of the internet’s most recognizable comedy sketches. TV and film critic John Rocha wrote on X: “The World Cup content we actually need in between games.” Other commenters echoed the sentiment in the language of sheer delight—one viewer said. “This skit was so monumental. ” while another added. “It will never get old.”.

A few people zeroed in on the small, human parts of the performance too, pointing to the camera operator’s audible laughter as “the icing on the cake.”

Key’s connection to soccer is part of why the collaboration feels seamless rather than forced. The World Cup partnership comes as little surprise for the Emmy-winning comedian, who has described the tournament as “Christmas.”

Even with a busy filming schedule for “Romy & Michele Get Married. ” the sequel to the 1997 cult classic. Key said he planned to keep up with every match. In a recent interview conducted while promoting a Casamigos campaign alongside Gabrielle Union. he said: “The best part is that at least it’ll be in the time zone I’m in. ” adding. “I’m going to try to watch the highlights for every single match.”.

On social media, the response has mirrored that enthusiasm: a viral sketch that turns match-day downtime into something playful. And for World Cup fans looking for something to hold onto between games, the return of Mr. Garvey has quickly become its own kind of tradition.

  1. I saw a clip but I didn’t even realize it was Mr Garvey stuff again. Keegan-Michael Key really be turning everything into a sketch. Also Casamigos being involved feels random as hell but I guess that’s marketing.

  2. Wait so he swapped roll call with soccer players… but did the actual match get interrupted or was this like during commercial breaks? The article wording is kinda confusing. If they’re butchering names like that I don’t know why the players let it happen, sounds disrespectful but maybe it’s a bit.

  3. The whole thing is kinda annoying to me tbh. Like we have VAR and refs and all that and they choose Keegan Key to do a pronunciation chaos moment. But I guess it got a million likes so whatever. I’m also seeing people say it was “needed between games” which sounds like they just wanted content not sports…
