Ke Huy Quan gives ‘The Goonies 2’ update

NEW YORK – A “Goonies” sequel is still in the works, Ke Huy Quan says.

Quan played bite-sized inventor Data in the 1985 movie, which followed an adventurous band of kids in search of lost treasure to save their home from foreclosure. In early 2025, Warner Bros. hired a scriptwriter for a sequel, with Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario producing alongside Chris Columbus, who wrote the original script based on a story by Spielberg.

Updates have been sparse, but Quan says he heard from Spielberg the sequel was still in the works. Speaking with USA TODAY ahead of his memoir release in September, Quan says he still has his “hopes up” for another trip to One-Eyed Willy’s ship. Quan’s memoir is poignantly titled “Never Say Die,” an homage to one of the cult classic’s famous lines.

Is ‘The Goonies 2’ coming out?

“The Goonies” sequel is still happening, though we don’t know much about it yet. In August 2025, writer Potsy Ponciroli told fans at the Venice Film Festival that he had turned in a “well received” first draft and was “moving in the right direction.”

“We’ve been trying to get the sequel going for the last 40 years. I still have my hopes up. All of us want to do this,” Quan says.

After playing Short Round in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” Quan starred in “The Goonies” with Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin and others. But as he grew up, his acting opportunities dwindled.

When the trailer for the 2022 film “Everything Everywhere All At Once” dropped, what surprised viewers more than daring multiverse concept was to see Quan returning to acting two decades after quitting. He was a kid the last time many had seen him onscreen.

“Goonies has meant so much to so many people. It has made a huge impact in people’s lives and I got lucky to meet a lot of fans up close,” Quan says. “They always tell me that that is the one experience that they really treasure because it’s not just about them, it’s not just about the movie, but it’s about those beautiful moments that they shared with their parents. And that’s what I really love hearing.”

USA TODAY has reached out to Warner Bros. for comment.

What would ‘The Goonies’ be like all grown up?

The cast of “The Goonies” have reunited in recent years, notably alongside Quan at the “Love Hurts” premiere in February 2025 and Quan’s hand and footprint ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles. Quan is close friends with Jeff Cohen, who played Chunk in the film and now is Quan’s entertainment lawyer. In his Oscars acceptance speech for best supporting actor, Quan thanked Cohen as his “‘Goonies’ brother for life.”

But what would it look like if the characters themselves reunited as adults? We asked Quan what would happen if the Goonies traded their bikes for a car on a road trip. Who’s riding shotgun? Who’s making the playlist?

“Because Josh Brolin is the more mature of all of us, I feel like he would want to be behind the wheel. I mean, certainly I don’t think he would feel comfortable or safe with us behind the wheel,” Quan says, laughing. “The playlist, I think that would be a fight between Martha Plimpton and Corey Feldman, who would be in charge. Sean would probably be in charge of where to go, where to stop, where to eat and all of that. And then it would just be Jeff and I in the back just chatting nonstop.”

And Kerri Green, whose character Andy had an onscreen romance with Brolin’s Brand, would be sitting shotgun.

“Kerri would be right next to Josh,” Quan says.
