Katy Perry credits Justin Trudeau for avoiding “dark side”

Speaking on Justin Tranter’s Unfamous podcast Wednesday, Katy Perry said the love she has with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau helped keep her out of a “dark side” mindset during a difficult past year.

Katy Perry didn’t describe her recent year in tidy headlines. She described it like a fight for focus—one she says Justin Trudeau helped her survive.

Speaking on the Unfamous podcast with Justin Tranter on Wednesday, the pop star opened up about what she’s been through: she said she broke off her engagement with Orlando Bloom, she’s been on The Lifetimes Tour, and she’s had to contend with Ruby Rose allegations.

Yet when she looked back at what carried her through, Perry pointed to love—and specifically the love she says she now has with Trudeau.

“I have love in my life now. That’s transformed me. You think when The Beatles say, ‘All you need is love,’ it’s a cliché? Clichés are clichés for a reason … it’s like you don’t know until you have your baby how beautiful that experience is and how it transforms you,” she said.

That shift, she claimed, helped her avoid falling into something darker. “I am constantly in transformation. and I have so many placements of Scorpio in my chart that it would be easy for me to go to the dark side. I’m constantly rebirthing, constantly transforming, constantly, you know, phoenix to ashes, then hopefully eagle.”.

Perry also said she doesn’t usually see herself as a victim. “I don’t typically feel like a victim — you can hear it in my songs [that] I don’t resonate with that — but last year was pretty tough.”

For her, the temptation wasn’t just pain—it was the “victim triangle,” and she decided not to live there. “It would have been easy for me to fall into that weird victim triangle. So. instead of falling into ‘woe is me. ’ I was just like. ‘Let’s just feel this f**king pain. let’s feel this anger and let’s move on. Let’s learn from it also. Let’s get some feedback from it’.”.

When the conversation turned to what kept her steady, she framed it as personal boundaries. “You know what it is?. It’s really boundaries within yourself, and then when to boil it even further down, it’s just self-respect. It’s just love for yourself. If you don’t have boundaries, you may need to look at that … or peel yourself out of it. That’s what I’ve been doing is peeling myself out of all the conditioning.”.

If you want to hear her full remarks, Perry’s comments were shared with the podcast audience around the 13:30 mark, accompanied by a link to the video embed of the conversation.
