Kash Patel’s UFC plot post risks sealed investigation

By early Tuesday morning, the first thing some White House officials saw was not a briefing memo or a controlled press release. It was FBI Director Kash Patel, taking to X.

Patel’s post came in the middle of a sealed investigation into an alleged terror plot targeting last weekend’s White House UFC event—an investigation that. sources said. was still moving through the next phase of arrests. Rather than waiting for the coordinated plan to unfold. Patel publicly described what law enforcement had learned and what had already been achieved. before additional suspects—“another 10 suspects or so. ” sources said—could be taken into custody.

“On June 10. FBI and our law enforcement partners became aware of a potential threat to the UFC America 250 event in Washington. D.C. involving individuals outside of the National Capital Region — and thanks to the rapid action of this FBI. our partners. and the Department of Justice in a multi-state operation. multiple individuals are now in custody and allegedly planned attacks were stopped cold. ” Patel wrote on X.

He added that. while the outcome “represented the best of investigative work. ” the operation was also “nothing out of the ordinary” for the bureau. especially during large gatherings like “the historic UFC 250 fight.” Patel said he attended the event with his girlfriend. singer Alexis Wilkins. and wrote: “That’s exactly what we did here. I want to thank our great agents and partners. this work remains ongoing and we will continue to update the public as permitted.”.

The timing was the problem, according to people familiar with the matter.

Ken Dilanian. a justice and intelligence correspondent for the network. wrote on X that Patel’s disclosure compromised the sealed investigation because it came before the remaining suspects—described as “another 10 suspects or so”—could be apprehended. One disgruntled administration official told MISRYOUM that the day started with confusion: “We all woke up this morning to see this on Twitter.”.

Before Patel’s post, the FBI and the U.S. Secret Service reportedly agreed to make a joint announcement later in the day. But sources accused Patel of “jumping the gun,” as he has done previously.

Secret Service and FBI involvement had already been described as a coordinated effort. Patel said the threat was identified on June 10 and involved individuals outside the National Capital Region. He also pointed to a “multi-state operation. ” which he credited to the FBI. its law enforcement partners. and the Department of Justice.

What law enforcement believed the plot involved—according to the reporting—was a plan to use explosive drones to trigger panic on the White House grounds and then shoot spectators as they evacuated. The alleged plan was meant to be followed by a “second wave” of terrorists storming the White House gates.

A handful of people were taken into custody in connection with the reported plot. One suspect’s mother had allegedly alerted law enforcement about her son’s suspicious activity.

At a Tuesday press conference, Matt Quinn, the Secret Service’s deputy director, appeared to be addressing Patel. “I’ll tell you a phrase I learned early in my career in the New York field office and that’s ‘Don’t choke on your own smoke. ’” Quinn said. “I’ll tell you that the Secret Service led that investigation from the beginning. I’ll tell you that case is ongoing. In order to maintain the integrity of the investigation and the security plan, we chose not to leak it.”.

Those comments landed the same day as the public post that had already altered the investigation’s risk calculus.

Patel. in his message. acknowledged that the work “remains ongoing. ” while also saying planned attacks were “stopped cold” and praising the agencies’ ability to detect. respond to. and bring to justice those who threaten Americans—“particularly during large gatherings like the historic UFC 250 fight.”.

The FBI and U.S. Secret Service responded with a joint statement that avoided direct engagement with the criticism of Patel’s role. The statement said they are “proud of our strong working relationship,” and it did not address why the public disclosure happened when it did.

“This investigation highlights that continuous partnership and could not have happened without the great work and coordination between our two agencies. ” the statement read. “This weekend’s thwarted attack should be a message to any criminal actor that if you target Americans. you will be found and brought to justice.”.

Taken together—the sealed nature of the operation. the planned joint announcement later in the day. and the concern that “another 10 suspects or so” still needed to be apprehended—the dispute centers on a single point: whether the public account arrived early enough to harm the next moves in a case still in progress.

For officials focused on stopping threats quickly, the margin for error is measured in minutes. On Tuesday, those minutes appear to have been consumed not by the alleged attackers, but by the decision to share details before the investigation had fully closed the loop.

  1. Sounds like Patel just gave away the whole investigation by posting on X, which is kinda wild if it’s sealed. I don’t really get why they can’t just wait till arrests are done, ya know?

  2. I mean the FBI always does stuff like this, right? Like “nothing out of the ordinary” except posting details mid-case. Also “UFC America 250” sounds fake to me like is it even real or is this one of those burner events?

  3. Sealed investigation my butt, because the first thing people saw was a tweet from the director. That would totally mess up the next arrests if there were like “another 10” coming, unless they already caught everyone. And why is he at the event with his girlfriend who’s a singer?? Feels like distraction to me, even if the terror thing is real.
