Kariako Village Launches First Community Transport Service

Kariako Village in Region One has welcomed its first community bus, easing long journeys for students and improving access to services for residents.

A first community bus has arrived in Kariako Village, and residents say the change can’t come at a better time.

In Region One along the Barama River, the hinterland community has been waiting for reliable transport for years. With the introduction of a dedicated community bus, the village is now seeing a practical solution to the everyday challenge created by its remote location and limited infrastructure.

For many families, the biggest impact is expected in the school system. Children who previously faced long, difficult, and sometimes unsafe trips to reach classrooms will now have safer and more dependable daily transportation.

That matters because consistent travel can shape more than just punctuality. When students are less exhausted from the journey, the day ahead becomes easier to manage, and learning is more likely to stay on track.

Beyond education, residents are also looking at how improved mobility can reshape daily life. Easier movement means quicker access to healthcare services, markets, and administrative centres, with less time and expense spent on trips.

Meanwhile, the new transport option may help local livelihoods. Farmers and vendors can move goods more efficiently, which can support small-scale economic activity and potentially improve household income over time.

The initiative follows a commitment made by Minister of Agriculture Sarah Browne-Shadeek during a recent visit to Kariako Village. During that engagement, Misryoum reports she spoke directly with residents and identified transportation as a critical need for the community.

As development continues across Guyana’s interior regions, Misryoum says projects like this underline how targeted investment in basic public services can make a measurable difference, helping ensure communities are not left behind.
