AUCKLAND, New Zealand — The moment came without delay: Kane Williamson announced his immediate retirement from international cricket on Friday, ending a 16-year run in which he became one of the modern game’s defining batters.

New Zealand’s men’s cricket team confirmed the decision on X and in a full statement on the New Zealand cricket website. saying Williamson’s retirement is effective immediately. “New Zealand’s most prolific all-format run scorer and arguably greatest ever batsman Kane Williamson has confirmed his retirement from international cricket effective immediately. ” the statement said. adding that the move brings an end to a career that included 378 games for New Zealand across all formats and helped set countless batting records.

The 35-year-old Williamson’s Test record was built over years of patient precision: he scored 9,515 Test runs at an average of 54.06, with a highest score of 251. In one-day internationals, he amassed 7,256 runs with 15 centuries and an average of 48.69. In T20s, he scored 2,575 runs.

Williamson framed the call as a feeling that had been forming for some time. “I’ve thought about it for a while. but over the last few days it’s become clear now is the right time. ” he said. “I’ve always felt a strong drive and hunger for international cricket. and I take pride in knowing I’ve given it my all in every match I’ve played for New Zealand.”.

His captaincy and composure were central to how fans and opponents described him: a graceful. versatile right-handed batter known for concentration and. at times. off-spin. Alongside his batting, Williamson took 30 Test wickets and 37 ODI wickets with his offbreaks. He was also widely respected across opposing teams, including for his sense of fairness in defeat.

In his message about leaving, Williamson said he still loved the group he had represented. “It’s a team I love, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have been part of it for so long. It will continue to be dear to my heart,” he said. “I leave feeling optimistic about where this group is heading. There’s a huge amount of talent, and a real desire to do something special with this New Zealand team.”.

New Zealand coach Rob Walter paid tribute to the player’s impact, pointing beyond statistics. “Anyone who’s had the privilege of working with Kane understands he is a very special player and person. ” Walter said. “His numbers and batting skills speak for themselves. but it’s what he means to this Black Caps team. as well as world cricket that will be his legacy.” Walter added: “Kane’s always put the team first and although we’re disappointed to see him go. we’re happy to know he’s content and at peace with his decision.”.

The retirement lands during New Zealand’s three-Test series against England. The second Test is scheduled to start next Wednesday at The Oval. Williamson’s final contributions for New Zealand in the current stretch were 0 and 18 during the first Test defeat at Lord’s, on a difficult pitch.

The team said his replacement for the England series will be named in due course.

  1. I don’t get it, the article says he’s thinking about it for a while but then he “retires instantly” during the England series? Seems kinda convenient timing like he wanted out before the second Test lol.

  2. His Test numbers are crazy (9k runs or whatever) but why not retire after the series? Also the England series starts next Wedn (what??) so is that even accurate? I swear cricket schedules are always weird.

  3. This feels like he got pressured or something, like NZ wanted him gone before he got booed or injured. It says 16 years, 33 Test centuries, all that, but “effective immediately” like ok so he just walked out mid-moment. I hope England doesn’t get an easy win now because everyone’s gonna be off their game.
