On a case where prosecutors say the stakes were as high as murder, Kai Cordrey’s plea sounds painfully practical: he can’t afford his way out.

In newly filed court documents. Cordrey—one of the three defendants charged in the alleged murder-for-hire plot targeting singer Jack Avery—asks a judge to cut his $2 million bail down to $100. 000. He argues he’s been stuck behind bars since May because he doesn’t have nearly enough cash to post bond.

The filing comes dated June 29. 2026. and it lays out a financial picture Cordrey’s attorneys say explains why the current amount is effectively unreachable. The attorneys describe the 26-year-old as having no criminal history and say he worked as a plumber’s apprentice before his arrest. They also claim he was living paycheck to paycheck.

According to the court submission, Cordrey has just over $6,400 in his bank account, owns no property or significant assets, and cannot cover bail at the $2 million level. The filing says he can only afford a $100,000 bond with financial help from his parents and arrangements with a bail bondsman.

Prosecutors allege that Gabbie Gonzalez, her father Francisco Gonzalez, and Cordrey conspired to have Avery killed during a bitter custody battle over the daughter they share. Prosecutors claim the trio explored hiring a hitman through the dark web, and all three defendants have pleaded not guilty.

In Cordrey’s new request, his attorneys argue he should not remain in jail solely because the bail number is out of reach. They say he is prepared to submit to conditions such as GPS monitoring, handing over his passport, and staying in California.

Now the decision rests with the judge—whether Cordrey’s claimed financial situation is enough to justify reducing the price of freedom, and whether the proposed conditions can address whatever risk the prosecution believes remains.
